1 MSAT/MAPTIS Data Archiving Process & Material Data Templates & Schema
Wayne Ziegler Materials Engineer U.S. Army Research Laboratory June 2014

2 Why have a Material Information System
To work smarter and faster Reduces duplication of testing Electronic notebook Faster dissemination and retrieval of data Stop data loss - Ensures data is available to next generation Improved data consistency and quality Improved work processes and throughput Accelerates implementation

3 Data management plans are vital to remain relevant
Successful plans use systems engineering approach. Programmatic Challenges? Lack of unified directive Requires investment of resources Culture Misinformation Current Strategy: Don’t reinvent the wheel-build on existing system to maximize impact. Build a DoD resource: Material Selection and Analysis Tool (MSAT) UNCLASSIFIED

4 Current Efforts – Additive Manufacturing
Material Informatics Vision DARPA Open Manufacturing Program Source: Richard Martukanitz, Director CIMP-3D

5 Modified Workflow Diagram
Traditional Workflow Execute Test/ Process Transfer Data Extract Data Lab /Process Notebook Analyze Data MSAT/MAPTIS Workflow Execute Test/ Process Import into Database Extract Data Analyze Data

6 Data Schema – defines organization of data
MSAT Import Templates Data Collection Tools Data Schema – defines organization of data Export Templates

7 MSAT 2. Define Data Arrangement
Data Schema – defines organization of data Data Collection Tools 1. Define data sets 3. Develop Import Templates (SQL) Import Templates 5. Mange Data – Access Control, Verification & Validation Export Templates MSAT 6. Define Data Use Cases, Data Analytics, Informatics, Model Inputs 4. Use Templates to Import Data 7. Develop Export Templates

8 Technical Considerations
Definition of the main function of the system How the system will fit in with existing systems and workplace practices Who will use the system, and how How data flows through the system What type of information will be handled How the system will be setup, deployed and maintained Who is responsible for, and owns, the various system components

9 Not every user is an expert
Practical Challenges Not every user is an expert Materials and process data is never complete Data has value – access control is critical (and potentially contentious) It takes time to rationalize and consolidate data Diverse end-users need data in diverse places and formats Materials information systems need end-users Designing a system from scratch is impractical
