4
WASTE MINIMISATION Re-use (bark chips) Waste prevention (grass farming) Recycle (organic fertiliser) Energy (biofuel production) Total Eradication of Disposable Green Waste
5
JCPZ SOURCES OF ORGANIC WASTE Animal waste from the Zoo Green waste from horticulture maintenance Green waste from ecological maintenance Food waste (animals and staff)
6
ORGANIC WASTE BASED PROGRAMMES ProgramProjectQuantitySourceComments Blue economyBiogas generation (including Zoo Programme) Est. 2000 tons per month JCPZ organic wastePotential of more waste from private and public entities, another bi-product is compost Blue economyMushroom farming500 tons of wood chips monthly JCPZ wasteVery minimal waste input Job creationCompost production12 membersZoo animal food and waste Job creation through EPWP Co-ops developmentCompost production2 Co-opsJCPZ organic wasteCo-ops developed Jozi@WorkHorticulture maintenance 1100 tons per month on high seasons JCPZ operationsCollecting and transportation of green waste to biogas site SME developmentAlien plant control1000 tons a monthJHB vegetationAlien plant maintenance and waste transportation

PARTNERSHIPS Partnerships with COJ departments: EISD: Research, policy support, climate change response (incl. separation at source) PikitUp: technical support around composting (incl. landfills); Partnership with Cape Advance – Consultant on Biogas Wits University Technical Assistance on composting Contract to supply material with Remade Recycling Jozi@Work (Coops and SMMEs) work packages around composting at the Zoo; University of Johannesburg and SANEDI around Biogas production Aim to release the CafeFino grid through Buffalo dung
8
JOB CREATION & CO-OPS PROGRAMME Animal Waste to Biofuel – Zoo CafeFino Tons produced 2234.18kg p/w and 70259.58kg p/m from animal enclosures Source of waste: green waste such as leaves, grass from grass cutting and herbivores waste (e.g. Lucerne,hay/teff) as well as animal faeces/waste Program on waste management: 2 Co-ops recycling through (remade) and composting at the Zoo Desired Outcome: Empower local community through job creation i.e selling of Zoo compost
9
ECOLOGICAL WASTE Ecological Waste: Maximum of 350 tons per month during high season Potential of generating 1000 tons per month through alien plant control Waste make up (reeds, grass, alien plants, hyacinth and water lilies) Currently all waste is dumped on land fill sites
10
OPPORTUNITIES Composting –Green Basisa Cooperative with 5 members (grass and animal poo) Recycling – Phroma Creations Cooperative with 7 members (glass, paper plastic, globes, cartridges etc.) Grass Farming – 400ha :Production of biofuel to contribute to City biofuel requirements (grass farming) Woodchips - from tree cuttings for mulching (mushroom initiative)
11
WASTE-TO-FUEL PRODUCTION Brown waste Green waste
