4. Definitions
Personification - When a non-human subject is given human characteristics.
Simile – A figure of speech that makes a direct comparison between two unlike subjects using either like or as.
Metaphor – Something in a literary work described as though it were something else.
Hyperbole – An exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally.

17. Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)
Born in Dayton, Ohio
Child of former slaves
Widely recognized as the first African American poet of national stature
Early pioneer of the Harlem Renaissance – cultural movement of the 1920s known as the “New Negro Movement”
