4 The transformation of the United States from an agricultural to an increasingly industrialized and urbanized society brought about significant economic, political, diplomatic, social, environmental, and cultural changes. * Key Concept 6.1: The rise of big business in the United States encouraged massive migrations and urbanization, sparked government and popular efforts to reshape the U.S. economy and environment, and renewed debates over U.S. national identity. * Key Concept 6.2: The emergence of an industrial culture in the United States led to both greater opportunities for, and restrictions on, immigrants, minorities, and women. * Key Concept 6.3: The “Gilded Age” witnessed new cultural and intellectual movements in tandem with political debates over economic and social policies.

8 * Why do we study the Sand Creek Massacre? * Was it appropriate or necessary for Colorado Governor, John Hickenlooper, to apologize for the Sand Creek Massacre 150 years later? * The Boston Massacre and Sand Creek Massacre both have the word “massacre” in the title. What does massacre mean and does the term really apply to both? * Do we have a responsibility to know and remember our local and national history? Why or why not?

9 Analyze the ways in which farmers and industrial workers responded to industrialization in the Gilded Age (1865 – 1900) Complete PEPs using what you know from the chapter and by watching the Crash Course video for chapter 17.
