“How and good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Ps. 133:1).

The Unity of the Spirit God’s Answer to Denominationalism and Ecumenism

One God and Father of all Over all—suggesting His authority over usOver all—suggesting His authority over us Through all—suggesting His power in usThrough all—suggesting His power in us And in all—suggesting His likeness by usAnd in all—suggesting His likeness by us

One God and Father of all has given to man one Lord That one Lord is His Son, Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:3)That one Lord is His Son, Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:3) Our allegiance is totally to Him and to no one else! Our allegiance is totally to Him and to no one else!

One God and Father of all has given to man one Lord accepted by one faith and one baptism…

The one faith is the teaching that we believe when we hear the gospel (Eph. 1:13) That we are sinners who violated the law of God (Eph. 2:1)That we are sinners who violated the law of God (Eph. 2:1) That Jesus died for us, that he was buried, that he was raised for us (Eph. 5:2; 2:4-10)That Jesus died for us, that he was buried, that he was raised for us (Eph. 5:2; 2:4-10) And that through Him we can have forgiveness of sins (Eph. 1:7)And that through Him we can have forgiveness of sins (Eph. 1:7)

The one baptism is the culminating manifestation of the acceptance of the gospel. “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mk. 16:16).“He who believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mk. 16:16). It is immersion in water in the name of Jesus for the remission of sin (Ac. 2:38)It is immersion in water in the name of Jesus for the remission of sin (Ac. 2:38)

One God and Father of all has given to man one Lord accepted by one faith and one baptism making us one body…

All those who embrace the one Lord in one faith and one baptism enter the one body. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Cor. 12:13)For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Cor. 12:13)

The one body is the church of Christ. “And He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:22-23)“And He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:22-23) “For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body” (Eph. 5:23)“For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body” (Eph. 5:23)

One God and Father of all has given to man one Lord accepted by one faith and one baptism, making us one body, indwelt by one Spirit,

That one Spirit is “the Holy Spirit” whom we receive when we unite with the body of Christ. All those who enter the one body drink of one Spirit as the source of their spiritual life (1 Cor. 12:13).All those who enter the one body drink of one Spirit as the source of their spiritual life (1 Cor. 12:13). All those who enter the one body filled with the one Spirit who is the source of their power (Eph. 3:16)All those who enter the one body filled with the one Spirit who is the source of their power (Eph. 3:16)

One God and Father of all has given to man one Lord accepted by one faith and one baptism, bringing us into one body, indwelt by one Spirit, possessing one hope.

That one hope is eternal life. “Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began…”“Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began…”

Ecumenism is inadequate because it ignores most of the seven ones that unite God’s people.Ecumenism is inadequate because it ignores most of the seven ones that unite God’s people. Denominationalism is inadequate because it subjects the seven ones to multiple definitions and interpretations, destroying their content.Denominationalism is inadequate because it subjects the seven ones to multiple definitions and interpretations, destroying their content. The unity of the Spirit requires acceptance of the Spirit’s teaching on all seven “ones”.The unity of the Spirit requires acceptance of the Spirit’s teaching on all seven “ones”.
