1 A.Angelopoulou National Technical University of Athens Department of Chemical Engineering Laboratory of Environmental Science and Technology Introduction / Presentation of the Industrial Waste Database System LIFETCY 98/CY/167

Industrial Waste Database System

Software characteristics The application is designed for use in a network environment – Microsoft NT Windows The database was designed with Microsoft SQL Server The application was developed using the programming language DELPHI The Geographical Information System (GIS) used is ARCVIEW (by ESRI)

Work breakdown structure Phase Description System engineering and analysis Software requirements analysis Design Implementation Testing Maintenance Training

Project Scope technicalenvironmental Development of an industrial waste database system in which technical and environmental data of industrial units is statistically processed and evaluated according to the environmental regulations.

Software application modules Management of database tables Reports and Statistical programs evaluating effluent measurements Geographical Information System (GIS)

Management of Database Tables This module contains programs which allow the user to enter data concerning the industry’s identity, water supply, liquid wastes, VOC emissions, solid and dangerous wastes, oil residues.

Main Screen Search criteria: Industry nameIndustry name NACE codeNACE code Questionnaire dateQuestionnaire date Internal codingInternal coding Menu choices: FileFile IndustryIndustry QuestionnaireQuestionnaire ReportsReports Company / Industry / Questionnaire view Search results

Menu choices (File) File > Help Tables Help tables hold data used by all other programs of the application : TechnicalTechnical EnvironmentalEnvironmental GeographicalGeographical

Menu choices (Industry) These programs allow the user to : insert a new company / industry insert a new company / industry view data of an existing company / industry view data of an existing company / industry update / delete an existing company / industry update / delete an existing company / industry

Menu choices (Industry) View Company’s Data Company’s identity Responsible person

Menu choices (Industry) View Industry’s Data A number of programs allow the user to easily pass through some screens and view the industry’s data

Menu choices (Questionnaire) These programs allow the user to : View an existing questionnaireView an existing questionnaire Insert a new questionnaireInsert a new questionnaire Delete a questionnaireDelete a questionnaire

Questionnaire The Questionnaire holds environmental data concerning a specific industry. An industry may have as many questionnaires as possible which may be related to a specific sample and date of measurement. Production process units Holds environmental data concerning : Liquid wastes Solid wastes Gaseous wastes VOC’s Oil residues

Questionnaire All programs are designed to have a user-friendly interface. Tab access to various screens Links to all help tables List boxes for all parametric tables

Reports / Statistical programs The application offers 21 reports, some of them are : Effluent measurements per industry, geographical area, NACE code, recipient Effluent measurements per industry, geographical area, NACE code, recipient Water usage, Water usage, Industry categorization (NACE coding) Industry categorization (NACE coding)

Reports / Statistical programs For each report, the user may define different selection criteria. The reports may be viewed on the screen and forwarded to the network printer.

Geographical Information System In order to view Cyprus map enriched with data entered, the database tables should be linked with the GIS project file.

Geographical Information System Data contained in the database tables is shown on line on the Cyprus map according to the view selected by the user. Each time an emission entry is added to the database, it is projected on the map.

Geographical Information System The user may also select and view data for specific districts which are colored according to the level of liquid wastes (e.g. beige for 333 mg/l, light brown for up to 1809 mg/l etc.)

Conclusion This application is very important as a decision support tool since it can assist the environmental authorities to : access / update the existing situation of emissions define problematic areas where pollutants exceed allowable levels take necessary pollution control measures

Acknowledgments Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance : A.Economides and all partners NTUA: Prof.M.Loizidou Dr.D.Fatta Collaborators in developing the application : Stelios Angelis Fivos Vilanakis Haris Loukatzikos
