Synthesis Reactions By: Annina Baker and Alex Lewis

What is a Synthesis Reaction? The combination of two individual parts to form a more complex whole A + B --> AB *Note - BrINClHOF ions come in twos; only exsist in diatomic state I 2 not I

Synthesis With Halogens Alkali Metal with Halogen - Only one of each needed for bond Ex. Li + Br  LiBr Alkaline Earth Metal with Halogen - One ion of Alkaline Earth Metal and two ions of a single Halogen needed for bond Ex. Mg + Cl 2  MgCl 2 Transition Metal with Halogen- No recognizable pattern. Cross charges. Ex. Fe + I 2  FeI 3

Synthesis with Oxidation (Oxygen/Sulfer) Alkali Metal with Oxgen- always have two of the alkali metal ion and one of the oxygen/sulfur ion. Ex. Na +O 2  Na 2 O Alkaline Earth Metal with Oxgen- Always have one of each ion. Ex. Mg + O 2  MgO Transition Metal with Oxgen- As usual, depends on the charge of transition metal. Ex. Fe + O 2  Fe 2 O 3 Nonmetal with Oxygen- forms nonmetallic oxide. Ex. C + O 2  CO 2

Synthesis of Metal-Oxides with Water Alkali Metallic Oxide with Water- forms metal hydroxides which have only one of each ion (metal and hydroxide). Ex. Na 2 O + H 2 O  NaOH Alkaline Earth Metallic Oxide with Water- forms metal hydroxides which have one metal ion and two hydroxide ions. Ex. MgO + H 2 O  Mg(OH) 2 Transition Metallic Oxide with Water- Forms metal hydroxides that have hydroxide ions depending on the charge of the transition metal. Ex. Fe 2 O 3 + H 2 O  Fe(OH) 3 Nonmetallic Oxide with Water- forms non- metallic hydroxide. Ex. CO 2 + H 2 O  H 2 CO 3

Let's Try Some! 1.Mg + Br 2  _______ 2.Al + O 2  _______ 3.K 2 O + H 2 O  _______ 4.Al + I 2  _______
