Testing for Ammonia in Cumberland County Lakes Mary Paradis TTU Undergraduate Cookeville,TN

Project Summary A heightened level of ammonia is harmful to fish and other aquatic life. The objective of this project is to investigate the ammonia concentrations of various lakes in Cumberland County. These concentrations will indicate the condition of the water quality in Cumberland County.

Introduction Ammonia breaks down into nitrite and nitrate in a process that consumes oxygen leading to decreased levels of dissolved oxygen. Decreased levels of dissolved oxygen has negative effects on some aquatic life (Dyers et al 2003).

Objective To determine and compare the concentrations of ammonia in Cumberland County lakes. Hypothesis There will be no significant difference in the concentration of ammonia from the different lakes.

Methods and Materials A study will be conducted in which water samples will be taken from various lakes in Cumberland County. Using an ammonia test kit, the concentration of ammonia for each sample will be taken.

Methods Test 1Test 2Test 3 Holiday Lake City Lake Lake Tansi

Expected Results The results of this study will show the concentration of ammonia for the tested lakes in Cumberland Country. These results can be used to show if there is a need for corrective action to be taken.

Project Timelines September: begin research October: collect data November: prepare results December: present results
