For young women (age 16-44) domestic violence is leading cause of injury with deaths greater than road accidents and cancer Between 25% and 50% of above women are victims of violence Council of Europe: “..It is even proven that the incidence of domestic violence seems to increase with income and level of education”

9 9 Human Cost  Canadian Model 7% of over age 15 suffer domestic violence Rates of spousal violence by a current or previous partner an estimated 653,000 women and 546,000 men Direct relationship between heavy drinking and incidents of domestic violence

12 12 Islamic Perspective  Substance Abuse O ye who believe! wine and the game of chance and idols and divining arrows are only the abomination of Satan's handiwork. So shun each one of them that you may prosper. Satan seeks only to create enmity and hatred among you by means of wine and the game of chance, and to keep you back from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer. Then will you keep back? - Ch 5 v 91/92

13 13 Eliminating Substance Abuse  Prohibition What intoxicates in greater quantity is unlawful also in small quantity (Hadith) “Mother of all Evils” (Hadith) Complete prohibition, including synthetic drugs  Yes or No

14 14 Combating Domestic Violence  “Best amongst you is one who treats his/her family well…” (Hadith)  “Show respect your children” (Hadith)  No vacuum - fill homes with goodness …. Surely, good works drive away evil ones. This is a reminder for those who would remember. (ch. 11 v 115)

15 15 International Perspective  Eliminating Violence Nations against others Terrorism  ….whosoever killed a person - unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land - it shall be as if he killed all mankind; and whoso saved a life, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind...(ch 5 v 33)  …and Allah love not those who create disorder (ch. 6 v 65)
