3. Citing sources: When do you need to? When you use or refer to someone else’s words or ideas. When you copy the exact words or a “unique phrase.” When you reprint any diagrams, illustrations, charts and pictures.

12. Citing sources within your paper Whenever you quote, paraphrase, summarize, or otherwise refer to the work of another. Parenthetical citations generally include: Last name of the author if you are citing an entire work. Last name of the author and either a page or paragraph number if you are citing a specific fact or quote. Omit author’s name if the name is mentioned in the text.
