Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands cattle project EU 870/04 Sipke J. Hiemstra 4 September 2004, NC-workshop Bled

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Background Continuation replacement of local/regional cattle breeds by specialized breeds Cattle breeds are a very visible part of our agricultural cultural heritage. Relationship with rural development objectives We always try to achieve self-sustainability of breeds Broadening the functions of regional/local cattle breeds could be an important strategy Complementary strategies (in situ, ex situ, marketing,..) are needed

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Objectives Collect data and experiences with existing situations/programmes of European local/regional cattle breeds; succesful or less succesful. To share experiences, to rationalize existing programmes and suggest cross-border or transnational priorities To develop selfsustainable, practical conservation strategies To communicate and disseminate results to a variety of users and stakeholders and to give advice to the EC To provide additional input for genetic resources databases

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Which cattle breeds? Following EU-criteria for status ‘rare’ or ‘endangered’ < 7500 breeding females or strong downward trend Breeds have a regional or local binding Preferably multi-purpose use

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Suggested Workpackages (so far) Detailed survey of cryopreservation activity and rationalization of cryo-strategies In depth breed survey and analysis of 15-20 breed-cases in Europe (socio-economic, genetic, demographic, etc)  to detect factors which determine the success of conservation programmes (self-sustainability) Literature review: existing programmes and tools Linkage of projectdata to European database Development of ‘overall’ strategy guidelines and policy advice

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Project organisation Small group of contract partners Subcontractors for breed-cases Involvement of NC’s, NGO’s, private sector  Suggestions for breed-cases ?
