3 Rope3 CLASSIFICATION  Life Safety Rope dedicated solely for the purpose of supporting people in rescue, fire fighting, or any other emergency operation, or during training evolutions  Utility Rope used for fire service applications with exception of life safety Note: All ropes used for life safety purposes must comply with NFPA 1983, Fire service life safety rope system components, current edition

4 Rope4 TYPES OF ROPES  Synthetic Fiber Usually nylon or polyester Fibers are continuous (for life safety) Resist mildew, dry rot, & chemical damage Stronger than natural fiber rope  Natural Fiber usually manila sisal or cotton constructed of short natural fibers Deteriorates rapidly over time Looses strength after it is wet Susceptible to mildew,dry rot, chemical damage, & abrasion
