3  Veteran generation  Born 1922-1945  Baby Boomers  Born 1945-1960  Generation X  Born 1960-1980  Millennial/ Net generation  Born 1980-2000

4  Born during the Great Depression and WWII  As adults were able to enjoy single family homes and improved economics  Believe if you work hard and follow the rules you will be rewarded  Responsibility to contribute to work and home life  Value Loyalty, respect authority, and expect rewards for hard work

5  Born into economic prosperity and opportunity  Television/ visual international news  Men landed on the moon/ president was shot  Emphasis on freedom and self (Me Generation)  Vietnam war, race riots, women's rights  Idealism/question authority and the status quo  Believe in making a contribution while ensuring a plentiful life for them selves

6  More working mothers and single parent households  Learned to manage on their own at an early age  Longstanding close friends become increasingly important  Media/ technology savvy  Space shuttle Challenger disaster  Value short term employment with less permanent relationships  Expect a balance in work and home life  Responsible for consistently updating their skills/ focus is outcomes not processes

7  Protected, more infrastructure to support them  Structured lives with more involved parents due to fewer children  Multicultural, multiethnic, global world perspective  Technology savvy multi-taskers  Bombing of the Federal building/ Columbine shooting  Renewed sense of patriotism and contributing to the collective good

8 1. Shift from hierarchical structure to team based structure at work 1. For older clients they feel their life's work has earned them respect 2. Information age and technology have caused younger staff to not be as reliant on senior staff 1. We can utilize the tecno savvy to help us develop new and improved ways of functioning

9  Split into groups  Try to be in a group that includes a veteran, baby boomer, X-generation and a millennial if possible  Look at your group of pictures  Who remembers what and why?  Write one thing you can do that will make one person from a generation different from your self have a better work environment  Write down one statement from each generation that will help you improve your interaction with a patient.
