3 Projection Projection – to throw your voice forward so you can be heard by everyone in the audience

4 Projection 1. Speak loud enough to be heard 2. Support your voice Projection is not yelling!!!

5 Enunciation Enunciation – to pronounce your words clearly  lets you speak clearly without sounding phony

6 Variety Variety- change the: a. Pitch – degree of highness or lowness of your tone of voice b. Volume – how loud or soft your voice is c. Speed – how fast or slow you speak your words

7 Physical Relaxation – relax your whole body Vocal Relaxation – relax and warm up your vocal system

8 Vocal Projection System – the physical components of voice, enunciation, and voice variety Physical Components: a. Diaphragm - the muscle in your chest which supports breathing b. Voice Box – your voice production system c. Mouth, teeth, and tongue

9  Your sound starts with air being pushed into your voice box by your diaphragm  Projection problems most frequently come from nervous tension  People’s bodies absorb sound  Never push your sound from your voice box

10 Performance  Prepare to perform, practice like you will perform.  Remember your audience

11 Audience Reaction Chart Audience Reaction Leaning Forward or cupping hands by ears Inattentive Not laughing when they should Probable Cause Can’t hear or understand Uninterested Can’t hear or timing is off Audience is “dead” – they aren’t in a laughing mood or are afraid to laugh Possible Solution Speak louder and enunciate Quicken pace, add more energy, larger gestures Speak louder; quicken pace and be more energetic Speak louder; quicken pace and be more energetic. (Make the most of it.) “Plant” good natural laughers in the audience. Others will hear them and dare to laugh
