4.  On a cold, wintry day an airplane crashed into a bridge in Washington, D.C., and plunged into the icy Potomac River.

5.  Many people were killed, but six people hung on to the plane’s tail while men in a helicopter threw them a life preserver.  The water was very cold, and it was hard to hang on to the plane.

6.  These  These people were afraid they might die before their turn came to grab the life preserver and be carried to safety.

7. EEEEvery time the rescuers lowered the life preserver to one man, he passed it to someone else so the other person could be rescued first.

8.  He did this until everyone else had been rescued.  When the helicopter came back to get him, the plane’s tail section had slipped under the water. HHHHe died before anyone could save him.

9.  Why do you think this man kept passing the life preserver to others?  How would you feel if you had been one of the people this man had saved?  Do you understand the courage and love it would take to be able to give your life for others as this man did?

10.  Adam  Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.  Because of Adam and Eve’s transgression (disobedience), their bodies became mortal.

11. TTTThis meant that their bodies would someday die. AAAAs Adam and Eve’s descendants, we also are subject to death, as they were.

12. PPPPhysical death is part of Heavenly Father’s plan. HHHHeavenly Father, in His great mercy, sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to overcome death.

18. PPPPilate, the Roman governor, washed his hands. He said that he was not responsible for Jesus’s death. TTTThe people said that they would be responsible for His death. PPPPilate told his soldiers to crucify Jesus.

19.  The soldiers beat Jesus with whips.  They put a purple robe on Him.  They made a crown of thorns and put it on Jesus’s head.

20.  They laughed at Jesus and spit on Him.  They called Him “King of the Jews.”  When they grew tired of mocking Him, they took the robe off Jesus and put His own clothes back on Him.

21.  Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus carry the cross.  Many people followed the soldiers as they took Jesus to a hill near Jerusalem.

22.  They nailed His hands and feet to the cross and lifted it up.  They also crucified two other men, who were thieves.

23. JJJJesus prayed. He asked Heavenly Father to forgive the soldiers who crucified Him.  They did not know that He was the Savior.

24. MMMMary, the mother of Jesus, was standing by the cross.  The Apostle John was there too. Jesus told John to take care of His mother. John took Jesus’s mother to his home.

25.  Darkness covered the land. TTTThe Savior suffered on the cross for many hours. FFFFinally His spirit left His body, and He died.
