Uplift of Earth’s Crust SWBAT describe how Earth’s mountains form and erode; compare types of mountains; identify the forces that shape Earth’s mountains.

Building Mountains What are the four types of mountains? –Fault Block mountains –Folded mountains –Upwarped mountains –Volcanic mountains You will be given clay, do not play with it until you are instructed to do so

Fault-Block Mountains Made of huge, tilted blocks of rock that are separated from surrounding rock by faults What type of force is at work in these ranges? –Pulling force What are some ranges that have been formed this way? –Sierra Nevada, CA –Teton Range, WY

Get your lab notebooks Title: Mountain Formation –Label the first one Fault Block Gently pull the clay apart, observe how it cracks and pulls before breaking –Draw your model and list your observations in your lab notebook and describe a fault block mountain

Folded Mountains formed by the folding of rock layers caused by compression forces. What type of force is at work in these types of ranges? –Compression or pushing force What are some ranges that have been formed this way? –Appalachian mountains, run from AL to Quebec

In your lab notebook Label this part Folded Mountains Take your clay and push the two ends toward each other. –Draw your model and list your observations in your lab notebook and describe a folded mountain

Upwarped Mountains form when forces inside the earth push up the crust What types of forces are at work in these types of ranges? –Upward force on the crust What are some ranges that have been formed this way? –Adirondack Mountains, NY –Rocky Mountains, CO –Black Hills, SD

In your lab notebook Label this part Upwarped Mountains Take your clay and flatten it some, take your pen and push upward in the middle. –Draw your model and list your observations in your lab notebook and describe an upwarped mountain

Volcanic Mountain layer upon layer of lava piles up until a cone- shaped featured forms. What type of forces are at work in these types of ranges? –Lava, it can happen at subduction zones What are some ranges that have been formed this way? –Mount St. Helens, WA –Mount Popacateptl, Mexico –Hawaiian Islands

In your lab notebook Label this part Volcanic Mountains Take your clay and break it into 5 sections, flatten each one and layer the next piece on top. –Draw your model and list your observations in your lab notebook and describe a volcanic mountain

Other Types of Uplift Isostasy –Earth’s lithoshpere floats on a plasticlike upper part of the mantle the asthenosphere.

Start your homework Answer review questions 1-4 on page 305 You may work with a partner Answer in complete sentences Finish for homework
