1 Earth Unit Lesson 12 – All about Sand

2 Objective  Explain how smaller rocks come from the breakage and weathering of larger rocks.  Describe rocks in terms of their parts (grains)

3 Vocabulary  grain: an individual piece of something, like sand or seeds  scale: how big or small an object appears  texture: how something looks or feels  sculpture: a work of art that is built, such as a sand castle or statue

4 Sand  Anyone who has ever been to the beach knows all about sand.  It’s fun to play in, but getting it out from between your toes can be a real chore.  Sand is one of the materials found in the earth. So, let’s find out more about sand!

5 Sand  What do you see in the picture?  What are some colors you see in the sand?  What are some things you can do in the sand?  How would you describe the sand in the picture?

6 The Many Uses of Sand  Sand is used to make sandpaper. Sandpaper comes in many colors and textures. Texture is how something looks or feels.  Sand paper comes in many textures. Some are very rough and some are not as rough.  What can sandpaper be used for?

7 The Many Uses of Sand  Sand comes in may colors and textures.  Which sand is best for making a sculpture? Dray sand or wet sand?

8 A Sandy Vacation  Sand is one of earth’s common materials. Let’s take a sand vacation and see some super sand sights.

10 A Closer Look at Sand  L et’s take a closer look at sand. This is what sand looks like close up- really close up. Each one of these little blocks is called a sand grain.  Look at all the four pictures. How are these the grains alike? How are they different? This is what beach sand looks like up close. The grains are very round This is what sand in the mountains look like up close This is what white sand looks like up close The upper right grain did not come from a rock. Can you tell why?

11 Sand Scale  Anything can be viewed at different scales. Scale means how close you are looking at something. You can look at pebbles or sand or silt at different scales. Let’s look at different sand scales.  The largest size a sand grain can be is 2 millimeters across. A grain larger than that is called a pebble.  Which of these four bits is a grain of sand?

12 Review  How would you describe sand? Is all sand the same?  What are some things you can do in the sand?  What are some uses of sand?  What is a grain?  How large can a sand grain be?
