It is an adaptation of a short story, “Sister Becky’s Child”, by the black American author Charles Chesnutt (1858 – 1938). The original was first published as part of a collection of short stories called “Conjure Tales” in 1899. It deals with human beings in slavery dreaming of freedom. The “conjure woman” is the local witch doctor, who is able to cast spells to help people, including, in this story, turning the baby into a bird so that it can fly to his mother and sing to her.
