2 why are you here? Can I presume that: you understand the value of using images on-line in your teaching that you are ‘quality conscious’ that you are aware that raw images generally need ‘post-production’- manipulation with a computer- to look and work their best that you want to better understand how that works….? 3 what’s it about? Digital photography is about dots (how many, where they are, how bright, what colour) Digital imaging is the manipulation of the dots (to alter, repair, to create new art) after the acquisition stage. 4 in this session …we’ll look briefly at a few ‘photographic fundamentals’ Look at a few examples of how Photoshop was used to manipulate raw images Look at how Photoshop can be used to create websites (I’ll talk about Photoshop, but you can use your own image editor for much of this…) …we’ll look briefly at a few ‘photographic fundamentals’ Look at a few examples of how Photoshop was used to manipulate raw images Look at how Photoshop can be used to create websites (I’ll talk about Photoshop, but you can use your own image editor for much of this…)

5 a basic truth about photography A camera is just a tool. Good photographs are created by talented photographers. All things being equal, the actual camera used makes little difference. 7 sizing This is key: When we consider images for inclusion in electronic presentations and delivery systems, we need to consider resolution and pixel dimensions…and forget about the more familiar “linear measurements”. e.g. 400 x 600 pixels x 72dpi, rather than 4 x 6 inches This is key: When we consider images for inclusion in electronic presentations and delivery systems, we need to consider resolution and pixel dimensions…and forget about the more familiar “linear measurements”. e.g. 400 x 600 pixels x 72dpi, rather than 4 x 6 inches

8 bitmap editing Retouching and manipulation- these are two of the best reasons to embrace digital photography. Finally, the control of the final image, from capture to output, is yours. In the past, your involvement stopped right after exposure. What can you change in an image? Anything. Retouching and manipulation- these are two of the best reasons to embrace digital photography. 9 Let’s look (briefly) at a few examples. In all cases, I’ll lead with the raw image (sized for this presentation, of course), and follow with the final manipulated image. Note and discuss any differences or improvements. Let’s look (briefly) at a few examples. 19 photo tip- image sizing There are a lot of people sharing unnecessarily huge files on LMSs and e- mail. For screen display, anything greater than 72 dpi is a waste. 20 photo tip- resolution Unless you have a good reason not to, you should plan to shoot at high resolutions and low compression. Otherwise, you may regret it when you take the once-in-a-lifetime shot.

21 Stage 2- here’s what I’d like to do: Photograph a volunteer or product Open the resulting image in Photoshop Make some basic image ‘improvements’ Save the file in a variety of formats Integrate those images into a web page Show some examples of how Photoshop can be used to develop complex composite images and websites.
