WHO IS THE MAN, JESUS, AND WHAT DOES HE EXPECT FROM HIS FOLLOWERS?

Ten Revolutionary Teachings of Jesus (John Ortberg)

Embrace a surrendered and sacrificial life.

If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. (Luke 9:23 – 24).

Do not take revenge; turn the other cheek.

You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I

say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also (Matthew 5:38 – 39).

If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for- tat stuff. Live generously (Matt. 5:42).

Share the best of who you are and what you have with those who can’t reciprocate.

When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they

cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. (Luke 14:13 – 14)

Forgive —without ceasing.

Forgive, and you will be forgiven (Luke 6:37).

Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying “I repent,” you just forgive them (Luke 17:4).

Do not worry.

I tell you not to worry about your life.... Can worry make you live longer? (Matthew 6:25, 27)

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow (Matt 6:34).

Love your enemies.

You have heard people say, “Love your neighbors and hate your enemies.” But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for

anyone who mistreats you (Matthew 5:43 – 44).

Humble yourself.

God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth (Matthew 5:5).

If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored (Luke 14:11).

Protect yourself from greed.

Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot (Luke 12:15).

Don’t store up treasures here on earth where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.

... You cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:19, 24).

Practice servanthood — it is the path to greatness.

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet (John 13:14).

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave — just

as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:26 – 28).

Do not judge or condemn.

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned (Luke 6:37).

What is your first reaction to making these teachings requirements for all members at Ridgecrest?

Why do we think that way?

Romans 12:2 “Stop being pressed into the mold of the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

What will this church do for me?

What would Holy Spirit say about requiring church members to fulfill these teachings: “Don’t think about how it affects

you. Think about this. If a church was filled with this type of people, wouldn’t it draw people in like bees to honey?

Embrace a surrendered and sacrificial life.

Do not take revenge; turn the other cheek.

Share the best of who you are and what you have with those who can’t reciprocate.

Forgive —without ceasing.

Do not worry.

Love your enemies.

Humble yourself.

Protect yourself from greed.

Practice servanthood — it is the path to greatness.

Do not judge or condemn.

Our church would explode if we lived out these teachings of Jesus!

Our outer actions and the way we live our life are a product of what we think is most important in life.

The problem is that sometimes we base our thoughts about what is important on what the world says rather than what God says.

An outer transformation comes about when our minds think like God thinks.

So how do we get our minds to think like God thinks?

It begins when we saturate our minds with God’s Word.

Psalm 119:11 “Your word have I hidden in my heart so that I won’t sin against You.”

Colossians 1:28 “admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ.”

Have you synched lately?
