Violence and the Kingdom

Violence and the Kingdom

Violence and the Kingdom WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU WHEN YOU HEAR OF WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD? HOW ARE WE AS CHRIST FOLLOWERS TO REACT?

Violence and the Kingdom Colossians 1:12-13 The Father … has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves

Violence and the Kingdom 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

Violence and the Kingdom Matthew 6:10 Let your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Violence and the Kingdom Mark 1:14-15 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Violence and the Kingdom Matthew 10:7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’

Violence and the Kingdom As citizens of this Kingdom behave differently view the world differently differently from the rest of the world differently from the way we used to live before

Violence and the Kingdom AS CHRIST FOLLOWERS AND MEMBERS OF HIS KINGDOM, OUR RESPONSES TO THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT AND TO ISLAM IN GENERAL SHOULD BE DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THE REST OF THE WORLD

Violence and the Kingdom 1. JESUS TEACHING ABOUT KINGDOM LIVING Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Violence and the Kingdom Matthew 5:38–41 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Violence and the Kingdom 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

Violence and the Kingdom Matthew 5:44-48 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. … If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

Violence and the Kingdom And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

Violence and the Kingdom 2. JESUS EXAMPLE OF KINGDOM LIFE Matthew 26:51-53 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

Violence and the Kingdom “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Violence and the Kingdom Isaiah 53:4-12 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;.

Violence and the Kingdom the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. … He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Violence and the Kingdom 1 Peter 2:21–23 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

Violence and the Kingdom 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Violence and the Kingdom

Matthew 5:38–39 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Violence and the Kingdom 1 Peter 2:23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Violence and the Kingdom Ephesians 6:12 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Violence and the Kingdom Philippians 2:5-11 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Violence and the Kingdom And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Violence and the Kingdom Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Violence and the Kingdom Psalm 46 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Violence and the Kingdom 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The L ORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see the works of the L ORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth.

Violence and the Kingdom 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. 10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The L ORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.Selah
