3 Charles I defies Parliament Charles I takes the throne in 1625 Charles starts a war with France & Spain - needs money! Parliament refuses to give Charles the money, so Charles dismisses the Parliament (#1) Charles can’t raise the money, so he has to recall Parliament Parliament forces him to sign the Petition of Right The petition states that the King: 1) Can’t tax w/o Parliament 2) Can’t dismiss Parliament 3) Must follow Magna Carta Charles signs the petition and gets his money Later, Charles ignores Petition & then dismisses Parliament again (#2) In order to get more money, he imposes fees & fines

4 English Civil War Charles offends the Scots trying to force them to accept an Anglican prayer book The Scots ready to invade England (Bishops War) Charles needs money to fight the Scots, calls back Parliament Parliament wants to pass a law limiting royal power Charles tries to have Parliament members arrested Angry Mob forms in London, Charles flees to Northern England Troops loyal to Charles = Royalists aka Cavaliers Charles ICromwell Troops loyal to Parliament = Parliamentarians aka Roundheads Parliament’s troops are led by a Puritan named Oliver Cromwell Cromwell’s troops win, Charles is tried & beheaded vs
