EXERCISE TEXTING AND PRESCRIPTION FOR CHILDREN, THE ELDERLY AND PREGNANT PEOPLE

CHILDREN AND FITNESS TESTING FitnessGram and The Presidents Challenge exists Measures a battery of parameters to assess physical activity patterns Clinical testing includes treadmill and cycle ergometer testing Cycle disadvantages are attention and muscle fatigue

GOALS ARE NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED Need to address increased strength and endurance, bone formation, weight management, stress and anxiety reduction, reduction of disease factors, fun and social interaction incorporating skill development

SCHOOLS SHOULD Provide lifetime physical activities Meet diverse interests Provide opportunities for all skill levels Promote self efficacy and skill development Not Limit to TEAM SPORTS

PARENTS SHOULD Set an example-be a role model Be Supportive Get Involved Encourage activity around home Provide Transportation

PROPER SUPERVISION AND TRAINING MUST INCLUDED AS An integral part of strength and endurance training Body size does not necessarily reflect physiological maturity Proper technique including exercise movements, speed of movement, breathing, full ROM and equipment use

ARRANGEMENTS MUST BE MADE FOR CORRECT TECHINQUE SO THAT INJURY WILL BE REDUCED WHILE GAINS ARE BEING MADE Stress Fracture Heat and Cold Injuries Sprains, Strains, Proper equipment are all important considerations

THE ELDERLY #1--Effects of aging on specific parameters- #2--not all people age uniformly #3--hard to distinguish between deconditioning and age-related decline #4--the possibility of latent or silent disease always exists so medical clearance is recommended prior to exercise

ELDERLY TESTING Use a modified protocol and a nonweight bearing mode if necessary Treadmill handrails mandatory Initial stage may need to be extended Be aware of meds and possible arrhythmias

ELDERLY EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION Mode-walking, aquatics, accessible, enjoyable, social interaction Intensity-start low and progress slowly- use peak HR instead of age predicted Duration-intermittent or continuous for 30 min Frequency-moderately on most days, vigorously 3 times per week

ELDERLY RESISTANCE TRAINING One set (10-15 reps) for each major muscle group Twice per week per muscle group 20-30 minute sessions Goal is to increase muscular fitness to remain independent Use same training principles for technique, ROM, breathing, and the like

FLEXIBILITY The most effective protocol not identified but should be directed toward enhancing musculoskeletal function, balance and agility Static stretches held for 10-30 sec with 4 reps per group Can be done everyday but at least 2-3 days per week Duration is variable based on individual needs and limitations

THE PREGNANT Exercise in pregnant people does not produce adverse outcomes Contraindications for exercise during pregnancy Reasons to discontinue exercise in box Maximal exercise testing usually reserved for clinical reasons

THE PREGNANT Those who have been exercising can continue after becoming pregnant with no modifications As the pregnancy progresses she must be alert to signs or symptoms which require modification in workout Nonexercisizers can begin after pregnancy with physician clearance

PREGNANT GUIDELINES Exercise regularly, avoid supine position, modify exercise according to symptoms Weight bearing vs nonweight bearing Avoid any activity that could produce abdominal trauma Watch diet, hydration level, and when you can resume post partum Know benefits of exercise during pregnancy
