1 WALT: Recognise and use phrases in the past tense with leisure activities. WILF: To be able to see the difference between the present tense and the past tense. You must be able to recognise 3 different tenses for grade C and above.

2 You have already learnt many phrases for leisure activities. These have been in the present tense. For example… Je joue au football Je fais du ski J’écoute de la musique Je regarde la télé I play football I watch TV I listen to music I do skiing Je vais à la piscine I go to the pool

3 Look at the same phrases, but this time they are in the past tense. J’ai joué au football J’ai fait du ski J’ai écouté de la musique J’ai regardé la télé I played football I watched TV I listened to music I did skiing Je suis allé à la piscine I went to the pool

4 Note how the phrases are different in each tense. Present TensePast Tense Je joue au football Je fais du ski J’écoute de la musique Je regarde la télé J’ai joué au football J’ai fait du ski J’ai écouté de la musique J’ai regardé la télé Je vais à la piscine Je suis allé à la piscine

5 In the present tense, there is a subject and a verb. Je joue au football subject verb In the past tense, there is a subject, an auxiliary verb and a past participle. J’ai joué au football subject auxiliary verb past participle Mostly, the “auxiliary verb” comes from “avoir” (to have), but in some cases it will come from “être” (to be).

6 The key to recognising the past tense is to look out for an auxiliary verb and a past participle.

7 Read the email on the right and find the French past tense phrase for the ones in English below. They are in bold in the text.

8 Put the words in each sentence into the right order to make a phrase in the past tense. Match it to the correct picture and translate into English.

9 Write a paragraph in French saying what you did last week based on the diary. Use the vocabulary below to help.

10 Extension Task: Translate the text into English.
