BY: ALYSSA SMITH AND ANNIE JOHNSON ALBERT EINSTEIN

EARLY YEARS Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. He grew up in a middle class Jewish family. Albert went to elementary at the Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich but felt alienated and struggled with the education. He had speech difficulty, where he would pause to consider what to say next. At age 5, he found a compass and was enchanted by the invisible forces that turned the needle. At age 12, he found a geometry book which he read over and over again. Then, Max Talmud became an informal tutor to Albert at age 16 and introduced him to higher mathematics and philosophy. Leading Al to wonder about light beams and how they would appear to not be moving if you were to ride your bike on top of them. This led him to write his first scientific paper. In 1894, Einstein’s family moved to Italy but left him at a boarding house in Germany so he could finish his education. Being alone made him so miserable that he dropped out of school, and moved to Italy to be with his family.

LATER YEARS Albert Einstein was enrolled into a Swiss Federal Polytechnic School after he graduated from a special high school in Zurich, Switzerland at age seventeen. After enrolling into school Albert gave up his German citizenship to avoid the military, at that school, is where he met his future wife, Mileva Maric from Serbia. They weren’t allowed to get married for a long time because of their different religious backgrounds. When Al’s dad was on his death bed he finally gave him his blessing to be married, so shortly after they tied the knot. They had two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. But when Einstein had his ‘miracle year’ and was more dedicated to his work than his family, his marriage fell apart. So, he had an affair with his cousin, Elsa, who he married after he divorced Mileva. After speaking all over the world Albert Einstein decided to move to the United States. In 1932, he moved to New Jersey and got a job at a newly formed institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He spent the rest of his career in New Jersey, trying to develop a unified field theory. On April 17, 1955, Al suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm and had internal bleeding, so he was taken to a medical center, but refused treatment. He said “I want to go when I want, it is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly.” Albert died the next morning at age 76.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1905 is known as Einstein's “miracle year” because he published 4 brilliant scientific papers: “the photoelectric effect(received a Nobel prize for); Brownian motion; special relativity; and the equivalence of matter and energy”. Appointed Privatdozent in Berne. Became Professor Extraordinary at Zurich. Professor of theoretical physics at Prague, Zurich and Princeton. E=mc 2 – The famous equation that shows the relationship between energy and mass. He gave the explanation for Avogadro’s number. Could give a valid answer to “why is the sky blue” simply by studying the scattering of light by each molecule in the atmosphere. Einstein had a theory that stated the faster one goes, the slower time is. One example of this is a Russian cosmonaut that spent roughly 2 years in space and is now 0.02 seconds younger than he would have been if he did not leave earth. He added to Newton’s theory of gravitational pull. Stating that earth has made a “dent” in the “fabric” of space giving us the power to put satellites in our orbit and get man to and from the moon.

E=mc 2 is an equation by Albert Einstein. E represents energy, m represents mass, and c 2 is the speed of light squared. Einstein did not develop this theory, he just perfected it. E=mc 2 gave birth to the atomic bomb.

FUN FACTS! "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." – Albert Einstein Einstein was an ugly baby. When he was born the back of his head was so huge that his family thought that there was something wrong with him. He did not talk until age 4. Before age 15 Einstein had mastered calculus. He was known for his unkempt appearance and never wore socks. Before Einstein’s body was cremated, pathologist Thomas Harvey preformed an autopsy in which he removed his brain and kept it in a jar for 20 years. Einstein’s eyes remain in a safe box in New York City. Yoda from Star Wars was modeled after Albert Einstein’s appearance. He loved to smoke. Israel’s Prime Minister asked Al to be the president but he said no.
