Rosshall Academy Looking After Our Local Area

Keeping Our School Tidy oTo raise awareness of the issue of litter, our pupils prepared and delivered presentations at assemblies to highlight the importance of keeping our local area clean and tidy. oAll pupils in the school were encouraged to join in our recycling competition oRecycle bins are located throughout the social spaces in the school

Recycling Competition To promote recycling in the school, we had an inter-house competition. At lunchtimes, over one week in March, we collected nearly 800 plastic bottles for recycling…saving them from landfill

Why we think it is important to recycle oRecycling Is Important because If we keep sending all our rubbish to landfills then soon we will be out of resources. oAlso products produced using raw materials consumes more energy than ones produced with recycled materials. By using less energy, we help the environment by producing less harmful by-products and emissions.

Also, some statistics:- oGlasgow increased its recycling rate by 5% in 2012 to 27.4% We can do better oEvery tonne of waste not recycled in Glasgow costs the taxpayer in Glasgow £64

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Litter Pick oPupils in S2 & S4 organised a litter pick over 2 days in Rosshall Park and the area around Crookston Road o Pupils have also worked in partnership with Lourdes Sec and Howford Primary. o Next litter pick this Friday 26 April with Howford.

Feedback from Local Residents “It’s so nice to see the kids helping to keep our area clean” “It’s really nice to see young people doing such good work” “Thank you for helping to keep our street nice”

Community Involvement o Pupils from Int2 Community Involvement have been regularly helping plant bulbs and do gardening work at Crookston Station. o They also contributed around 1500 volunteering hours to the local community last year, including – o helping in nurseries o assisting in local primary schools o working with older people's homes. o Next year 30 pupils in S4 will undertake volunteering activities in the local area

And more… o We also have an S3 John Muir Award who meet each week. o The Discovery Award is about Discovering, Exploring, Conserving and Sharing learning about a local wild space. o Part of this has involved two visits to Rosshall Park with the Countryside Ranger.
