Little House in the Big Woods Links to LOC Resources Laura Ingalls Wilder Log Cabin Covered Wagon Food Preparation Author: Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House in the Big Woods HarperCollins (BYR); 1932 Book Summary: Told by Laura Ingalls Wilder who lives in the woods of Wisconsin with her Pa, Ma, and two sisters, her life is simple, quiet, and full of the love of her family. They work hard, but their time together is what's most important. Setting: Rural life during the late 1800's Objective: Students will compare and contrast culture today with the culture in the West of the late 1800's.

Who was Laura Ingalls Wilder? Laura Ingall's Wilder shared the story and journey of her life through her Little House on the Prairie books, beginning with 'Little House in the Big Woods.' In groups, investigate interesting facts about what made Laura's life unique and different than yours, and write a biography of Laura.

How did Laura and her family prepare and save food? Preparing food in a log cabin was very different in pioneer days because they did not have refrigerators or stoves. Write a journal and explain how you think Laura and her family cooked their food and kept it cold inside their log cabin home.

What would you bring on a carriage ride? Imagine the only form of transportation you have is a covered wagon. Trips were often very long and only necessary items could be taken along. Identify essential items you think Laura and her family may have taken on a long journey with them by drawing and labeling a picture of her family inside a covered wagon.

Were recipes in the 1800's similar to today's recipes? Compare and contrast two different recipes, and determine which you think is today's recipe of pudding and which one is a recipe of the 1800's like Laura and her mom would have made? Look for context clues. Make the authentic1800's pudding recipe as a class and compare it to our pudding today.

Standards South Carolina o 2-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of cultural contributions made by people from the various regions of the United States.
