What kind of junk am I using? What Apps are Available Today?

Vine WhatSocial network providing a constant supply of short looping videos. WhyTech is dedicated to making it easier and more enjoyable to share and watch short video clips with friends. Good“Selfies” are so 2009… introducing the “Selfie Video” BadVine is mostly harmless. Inappropriate content does exist and can be stumbled upon or found pretty easily, despite there being good controls in place to help combat it. The user also has to realize that ALL SHARED VINES ARE PUBLIC. Checkout the Vine’s “Discover” feature and search “Fairfield, CA” if you don’t believe me. Also “Vining and Driving”… these people are idiots.

Snap Chat WhatAllows users to send chat messages, photos and videos “SNAPS” that only remain on the receivers device for 5-10 seconds WhyThe purpose was to make a service that ensured your conversations were private. The advantage of knowing that what you say or do is not saved. GoodSome conversations should be private… BadApp is often used for sexting as user feel safe. However noting prevents the recipient from saving the photos or videos by screen capture, etc.

KHAN Academy WhatProvides free education on core competency skills. Also provides free training and a range of other skills including programming, etc. WhyThey are a Non Profit that believes that everyone, everywhere should have access to quality education. Apparently they did not get the “Funding based on Test Score” memo… GoodHas become a staple resource for parents to use when their kids ask them for help in factoring quadratic expressions. BadParents can no longer use the excuse of “Pay Attention” in class when their kids ask for help in factoring quadratic expressions.

Proloquo2Go WhatAn AAC App (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) designed for individuals with Autism, the app allows users to communicate with others via pictures within the application. WhyPictures are provided to represent feelings and expressions (in addition to things) so that users can create meaningful sentences to express their feelings. “My Stomach… hurts…” GoodIn addition to its primary goal, these AAC apps provide a very low cost point for equipment that used to be unattainable for many people. Lots of different AAC apps also available. Bad

Experience Project WhatAllows users to send chat messages, photos and videos “SNAPS” that only remain on the receivers device for 5-10 seconds WhyThe purpose was to make a service that ensured your conversations were private. The advantage of knowing that what you say or do is not saved. GoodSome conversations should be private… BadApp is often used for sexting as user feel safe. However noting prevents the recipient from saving the photos or videos by screen capture, etc.

Whisper.sh WhatAllows users to anonymously share secrets with the public. Shared secrets can have a location tag - view whispers by “Fairfield, CA”. You can add people to your friend circle if you like their whispers. WhyGeared towards females. Encourages to share their misgivings and faults and make it look acceptable, stylish, permissible, etc. GoodThe website design and style is a pretty good Pinterest knockoff… BadMakes you feel like the things you did wrong are acceptable and ok. You feel better when you see someone who has done something worse then you. Allows you to make friends via misdeeds (what could go wrong there). Often used for bullying with it’s geo-tagging feature.

KIK WhatA rather straight forward messaging app for your smartphones. WhyCreated by University of Waterloo students, purpose was to make messaging software more flexible and interactive with your device. For example, you can browse webpages as part of your chat. GoodCuts down on your phones text messaging costs I guess… BadLike other messaging apps – the bad depends on it’s use. It can be harmless. Kik is unfortunately misused for sexting with strangers. The app has a 17+ age rating. Go to the app stores review page, scroll through the reviews and you will find thousands of reviews with “addme” style requests to exchange nudies and so forth.

Tinder WhatAllows users to anonymously browse peoples profiles nearby to your location. If you “like” someone and they happen to “like” you back, it’s a “Match” and you are able to chat. It’s really just a low profile dating service. WhyThe purpose was to make a dating app more fun, more relaxed and not so intense… “Social Discovery” is what you say to investors… GoodSome conversations should be private… BadMost dating apps often become misused as hookup apps. Tinder is used as the example – but there are many more out there such as OkCupid, Blender, Down (aka “Bang with Friends”).

Closing

Coming Full Circle  Share the gospel  Enrich your lives  No magic tool  Caution on anonymity  Pay attention (ratings)  Choose that which is good.
