Governments of warring nations raised taxes and borrowed huge amounts of money to fund their war efforts. Food, clothing, gasoline and other items were rationed. Governments set prices. Governments forbid strikes by workers.

All warring nations in WW1 except Britain established a draft or mandatory military service for young men. Germany established forced civilian labor

Total war required controlling public opinion. Even democratic countries had censors who controlled the press, literature, the arts, movies. Propaganda Wars used the spread of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause. Propaganda was used to fuel hatred for the enemy by accusing them of atrocities.

Women took over jobs previously only done by men. Women worked in dangerous war industries and were sometimes injured or killed. Women grew food to fight the British food shortages. Women worked as nurses close to the front lines in danger of enemy fire, pests and disease. Their efforts in the war helped women gain the vote.
