4 Abstrak ABSTRACT Khasanah, Marisatul. 2010. Interpersonal Meaning Analysis in Michael Heart’s “We Will Not Go Down” (Song for Gaza) and Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World”. Final Project. Semarang: Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. 1st Advisor: Dr. Djoko Sutopo, M.Si. 2nd Advisor: Widhiyanto, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: Interpersonal meaning, attitudes, judgment, tenor, mood, modality, intensity, song This final project is concerned with the analysis of interpersonal meaning found in the song “We will not Go Down” by Michael Heart and “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. Interpersonal meaning means that we use language to interact with others, to establish and maintain relations with them, to influence their judgments and behavior and to express our point of view on things in the world. In order to focus on the topic, I limited the discussion by presenting the interpersonal meaning identification found in the songs entitled “We will not Go Down” and “Heal the World”. Those particular songs have the same theme and dedicated to the victims of war. These songs are typically formed to express the writers’ criticism about the political or social order and support for the civil rights, and antiwar. This study aimed to describe the song writers’ attitudes and judgments and the tenor towards the situation expressed in the songs, to explain the realization of the tenor in the songs and to explain the realization of the writers’ mood in the songs. The data of this study were taken from the lyrics of Michael Heart’s song entitled “We will not Go Down” and Michael Jackson’s song entitled “Heal the World”. The lyrics of those songs reflect the expression of the political or social order and support for the civil rights, and antiwar. After analyzing the data, I found that the large parts of the two songs are declarative in structure by which the writers of the songs feel sure about what they are saying. I also found the use of modality that reflects the writers of the songs’ judgment of certainty, intensity and probability towards something. The use of several declarative clauses found in the songs, have semantic meaning of commands which reflect the way of the song writer uses the language. The analysis of status shows that the relationship between the writers of the songs or the singers and the listeners is equal or parallel. Moreover, the songs are familiar among the universal listeners. It answers the analysis of contact. The tenor of the text is between the composers of the songs that act either as the writers and the singers and the listeners. There is no interaction takes place directly between the participants
