Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 49, Ali: a bout Allah's greatness Praise Allah who knows all hidden things, and towards Him all things point, who cannot be seen by the eyes yet the eyes cannot deny Him. The proving mind of His existence can not perceive Him, so High He is that nothing can match the height, and so close He is that nothing is nearer. Neither Allah’s highness makes Him distant from His creatures, nor His nearness to them puts them on equal footing with Him. He denied the minds of elucidating His qualities, but did not prevent them from the knowledge of Him. So He is such that all existence points to Him, without denying. High is He beyond those who liken Him to things or those who deny Him. الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي بَطَنَ خَفِيَّاتِ الاُْمُورِ، وَدَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ أَعْلاَمُ الظُّهُورِ، وَامْتَنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِ الْبَصِيرِ; فَلاَ عَيْنُ مَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ تُنْكِرُهُ، وَلاَ قَلْبُ مَنْ أَثْبَتَهُ يُبْصِرُهُ، سَبَقَ فِي الْعُلُوِّ فَلاَ شَيءَ أَعْلَى مِنْهُ، وَقَرُبَ فِي الدُّنُوِّ فَلاَ شَيْءَ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُ، فَلاَ اسْتِعْلاَؤُهُ بِاعَدَهُ عَنْ شَيْء مِنْ خَلْقِهِ، وَلاَ قُرْبُهُ سَاوَاهُمْ في المَكَانِ بِهِ، لَمْ يُطْلِعِ الْعُقُولَ عَلَى تَحْدِيدِ صِفَتِهِ، ولَمْ يَحْجُبْهَا عَنْ وَاجِبِ مَعْرِفِتِهِ، فَهُوَ الَّذِي تَشْهَدُ لَهُ أَعْلاَمُ الْوُجُودِ، عَلَى إِقْرَارِ قَلْبِ ذِي الْجُحُودِ، تَعَالَى اللهُ عَمَّا يَقولُ الْمُشَبِّهُونَ بِهِ وَالْجَاحِدُونَ لَهُ عُلوّاً كَبِيراً!

I praise Him for His continual Grace and His extensive bounties. I believe in Him as He is the First and the Manifest. I seek His guidance as He is the intimate Guide. I seek His aid for He is able and Mighty. I depend upon Him for He suffices and supports. And I stand witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is His Servant and Prophet, whom He sent to enforce His commands, to exhaust His pleas and to present His warnings. الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي عَلاَ بِحَوْلِهِ، ودَنَا بِطَوْلِهِ، مَانِحِ كُلِّ غَنِيمَة وَفَضْل، وَكَاشِفِ كُلِّ عَظِيمَة وَأَزْل. أَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى عَوَاطِفِ كَرَمِهِ، وَسَوَابِغِ ـ نِعَمِهِ، وَأُومِنُ بهَ أَوَّلاً بَادِياً، وَأَسْتَهْدِيهِ قَرِيباً هَادِياً، وَأَسْتَعِينُهُ قَاهِراً قَادِراً، وَأَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْهِ كَافِياً نَاصِراً. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً (صلى الله عليه وآله) عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، أَرْسَلَهُ لاِنْفَاذِ أَمْرِهِ، وَإِنْهَاءِ عُذْرِهِ وَتَقْدِيمِ نُذُرِهِ.

He is the First, such that nothing was before Him. He is the Last, such that there is no limit for Him. Neither assumptions can capture any of His qualities nor Hearts can comprehend about His nature. Neither can analysis nor division be applied to Him. And neither can the eyes or the hearts grasp Him. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ: الاَْوَّلُ لاَ شَيْءَ قَبْلَهُ، وَالاخِرُ لاَ غَايَةَ لَهُ، لاَ تَقَعُ الاَْوْهَامُ لَهُ عَلى صِفَة، وَلاَ تُعْقَدُ الْقُلُوبُ مِنْهُ عَلَى كَيْفِيَّة، وَلاَ تَنَالُهُ التَّجْزِئَةُ وَالتَّبْعِيضُ، وَلاَ تُحِيطُ بِهِ الاَْبْصَارُ وَالْقُلُوبُ.

Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 90, Ali: about Allah's attributes Praise be to Allah, recognized without being seen, creates without deliberation, and always continues to exist. When there was: Neither sky with domes, nor barriers with high doors, nor nights of gloom, nor quiet oceans, nor mountains with passages, nor mountains with trails, nor earth of spreading floors, nor self-reliant creature. Allah is the Innovator of creation and its inheritor, and He is the Lord of the creation and its Sustainer. The sun and the moon move steadily by His will, they age that which is new, and bring neigh near what is a distant thing. الْحَمْدُ للهِ الْمَعْرُوفِ مِنْ غَيْرِ رُؤْيَة، الْخَالِقِ مِنْ غَيْرِ رَوِيَّة، الَّذِي لَمْ يَزَلْ قَائِماً دَائِماً; إِذْ لاَ سَمَاءٌ ذَاتُ أَبْرَاج، وَلاَ حُجُبٌ ذَاتُ إِرْتَاج، وَلاَ لَيْلٌ دَاج، وَلاَ بَحْرٌ سَاج، وَلاَ جَبَلٌ ذُوفِجَاج، وَلاَ فَجٌّ ذُواعْوِجَاج، وَلاَ أَرْضٌ ذَاتُ مِهَاد، وَلاَ خَلْقٌ ذُوااعْتَِماد: ذلِكَ مُبْتَدِعُ الْخَلْقِ وَوَارِثُهُ، وَإِلهُ الْخَلْقِ وَرَازِقُهُ، وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ دَائِبَانِ فِي مَرْضَاتِهِ: يُبْلِيَانِ كُلَّ جَدِيد، وَيُقَرِّبَانِ كُلَّ بَعِيد.

When anticipated, You are the best to be wished from. When implored, You are the Most liberal to be hoped from. O' Allah! You have conferred on me such that I praise not any but You, and I extol no one but You. And I would not direct my praise to the sources of disappointment and centers of misgivings. You kept away my tongue from extolling humans and of the praises of the created and the sustained. O' Allah! He who praises has for whom he praised the right of reward and recompense. O’ Allah! I have turned to Thee with my eye at the riches of Thy Mercy and the treasures of Thy forgiveness. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْوَصْفِ الْجَمِيلِ، وَالتَّعْدَادِ الْكَثِيرِ، إِنْ تُؤَمَّلْ فَخَيْرُ مَأْمُول، وَإِنْ تُرْجَ فأَكْرَمُ مَرْجُوٍّ. اللَّهُمَّ وَقَدْ بَسَطْتَ لي فِيَما لاَ أَمْدَحُ بِهِ غَيْرَكَ، وَلاَ أُثْنِي بِهِ عَلَى أَحَد سِوَاكَ، وَلاَ أُوَجِّهُهُ إِلَى مَعَادِنِ الْخَيْبَةِ وَمَوَاضِعِ الرِّيبَةِ، وَعَدَلْتَ بِلِسَاني عَنْ مَدَائِحِ الاْدَمِيِّينَ، وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَى الْمَرْبُوبِينَ الْـمَخْلُوقِينَ. اللَّهُمَّ وَلِكُلِّ مُثْن عَلَى مَنْ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ مَثُوبَةٌ مِنْ جَزَاء، أَوْ عَارِفةٌ مِنْ عَطَاء; وَقَدْ رَجَوْتُكَ دَلِيلاً عَلَى ذَخَائِرِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَكُنُوزِ الْمَغْفِرَةِ.

21. Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 132, Ali: in Khutba about death We praise Allah for what He takes or gives, and for what He inflicts or tries us with. He is alert to every hidden thing, who is acquainted with all that is concealed. He knows the secrets of the hearts and what the eyes try to conceal. We testify that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad (pbuh) was His choice and advocate, deputized by Him; evidence tendered both confidentially and in the open, by heart and by tongue. By Allah, this is what is serious, it is not for fun, it is the Truth not falsehood. It is none else than death whose caller rings in the ears, and to its drags men are making haste. O’ men! Let not the majority of people seduce you…… نَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا أَخَذَ وَأَعْطَى، وَعَلَى مَا أَبْلَى وَابْتَلَى، الْبَاطِنُ لِكُلِّ خَفِيَّة، الْحَاضِرُ لِكُلِّ سَرِيرَة، العَالِمُ بِمَا تُكِنُّ الصُّدُورُ، وَمَا تَخُونُ الْعُيُونُ. وَنَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلهَ غَيْرُهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّداً نَجِيبُهُ وَبَعِيثُهُ، شَهَادَةً يُوَافِقُ فِيهَا السِّرُّ الاِْعْلاَنَ، وَالْقَلْبُ اللِّسَانَ. فَإِنَّهُ وَاللهِ الْجِدُّ لاَ اللَّعِبُ، وَالْحَقُّ لاَ الْكَذِبُ، وَمَا هُوَ إِلاَّ الْمَوْتُ أَسْمَعَ دَاعِيهِ، وَأَعْجَلَ حَادِيهِ، فَلاَ يَغُرَّنَّكَ سَوَادُ النَّاسِ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ،.…

Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 155, Ali: about the works of Creation Praise be to Allah, whose essence cannot be defined, and whose greatness has the minds restrained, thus minds cannot find ways to approach the boundary of His realm. He is Allah, the Truth, the Manifest of Truth. He is more True and Manifest than eyes can see. Intellect cannot comprehend Him by fixing for Him limits (thus attributing shape to Him), nor illusions can grasp Him by fixing quantities for Him (thus attributing body to Him). He created creatures without an example, nor with advice of a counsel, or the assistance of a helper. His creation was finalized by His command, and bowed to His obedience. It responded to Him without defiance, and obeyed Him without resistance. الْحَمْدُ للهِِ الَّذِي انْحَسَرَتِ الاَوْصَافُ عَنْ كُنْهِ مَعْرِفَتِهِ، وَرَدَعَتْ عَظَمَتُهُ الْعُقُولَ، فَلَمْ تَجِدْ مَسَاغاً إِلَى بُلُوغِ غَايَةِ مَلَكُوتِهِ! هَوَ اللهُ الْحَقُّ الْمُبِينُ، أَحَقُّ وَأَبْيَنُ مِمَّا تَرَى الْعُيُونُ، لَمْ تَبْلُغْهُ الْعُقُولُ بِتَحْدِيد فَيَكُونَ مُشَبَّهاً، وَلَمْ تَقَعْ عَلَيْهِ الاَْوْهَامُ بِتَقْدِير فَيَكُونَ مُمَثَّلاً. خَلَقَ الْخَلْقَ عَلَى غَيْرِ تَمْثِيل، وَلاَ مَشُورَةِ مُشِير، وَلاَ مَعُونَةِ مُعِين، فَتَمَّ خَلْقُهُ بِأَمْرِهِ، وَأَذْعَنَ لِطَاعَتِهِ، فَأَجَابَ وَلَمْ يُدَافِعْ، وَانْقَادَ وَلَمْ يُنَازِعْ.

25. Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 178, Ali: in Praise of Allah Allah recognizes all simultaneous events with ease. Time does not change Him, place does not contain Him, and the tongue can not describe Him. He knows the number of water drops, that of the stars in the sky, and the currents of winds in the air, and even the movements of ants on rocks or the resting place of grubs in the dark night. He knows where leaves fall, and even the slight change of the pupils of the eyes. I stand witness that there is no deity but Allah, He is with no parallel, not doubted, whose religion is not denied, and whose what He made is beyond question. My witnessing Him is of a man whose intention is truthful, with clear conscience, with sincerity in belief, and whose loads of good actions are heavy. لاَ يَشْغَلُهُ شَأْنٌ، وَلاَ يُغَيِّرُهُ زَمَانٌ، وَلاَ يَحْوِيهِ مَكَانٌ، وَلاَ يَصِفُهُ لِسَانٌ، وَلاَ يَعْزُبُ عَنْهُ عَدَدُ قَطْرِ الْمَاءِ، وَلاَ نُجُومِ السَّماءِ، وَلاَسَوَافِي الرِّيحِ فِي الْهَوَاءِ، وَلاَ دَبِيبُ الـنَّمْلِ عَلَى الصَّفَا، وَلاَ مَقِيلُ الذَّرِّ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الظَّلْمَاءِ يَعْلَمُ مَسَاقِطَ الاَْوْرَاقِ، وَخَفِيَّ طَرْفِ الاَْحْدَاقِ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إلهِ إِلاَّ اللهُ غَيْرَ مَعْدُول بِهِ، وَلاَ مَشْكُوك فِيهِ، وَلاَ مَكْفُور دِينُهُ، وَلاَ مَجْحُود تَكْوِينُهُ، شَهَادَةَ مَنْ صَدَقَتْ نِيَّتُهُ، وَصَفَتْ دِخْلَتُهُ، وَخَلَصَ يَقِينُهُ، وَثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ.

Nahjul Balaaghah about Allah's Attributes In Sermon 186, Ali: about the Oneness of Allah Allah manifests Himself over the earth with His Might and Authority, and perceives of its works by his skill and knowledge. He is Mighty over everything by His Eminence and Glory. Nothing on earth defies Him, nor does it oppose Him so as to overpower Him. And no swift-footed creature can run away as to surpass Him. Nor does He need wealth of anyone to sustain Him. All things bow to Him, and in humility they give in before His greatness. They cannot flee away from His Might to someone else so as to escape His reward or pain. No parallel for Him is there to match Him, nor any like Him so as to equal Him…… هُوَ الظّاهِرُ عَلَيْهَا بِسُلْطَانِهِ وَعَظَمَتِهِ وَهُوَ الْبَاطِنُ لَهَا بِعِلْمِهِ وَمَعْرِفَتِهِ، وَالْعَالي عَلَى كَلِّ شَيْء مِنهَا بِجَلاَلِهِ وَعِزَّتِهِ. لاَ يُعْجِزُهُ شَيْءٌ مِنْهَا طَلَبَهُ، وَلاَ يَمْتَنِعُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَغْلِبَهُ، وَلاَ يَفُوتُهُ السَّرِيعُ مِنْهَا فَيَسْبِقَهُ، وَلاَ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى ذِي مَال فَيَرْزُقَهُ. خَضَعَتِ الاَْشْيَاءُ لَهُ، وَذَلَّتْ مُسْتَكِينَةً لِعَظَمَتِهِ، لاَ تَسْتَطِيعُ الْهَرَبَ مِنْ سُلْطَانِهِ إِلَى غَيْرِهِ فَتَمْتَنِعَ مِنْ نَفْعِهِ وَضَرِّهِ، وَلاَ كُفؤَ لَهُ فَيُكَافِئَهُ، وَلاَ نَظِيرَ لَهُ فَيُسَاوِيَهُ……

Gentle in knowing the details, and knowledgeable to oversee them. Your limbs are a witness, The organs of your body testify against you, Your conscience serves Him to watch you, And even your loneliness is open to Him. إِنَّ اللهَ سُبْحَانَهُ لاَ يَخْفَى عَلَيْهِ مَا الْعِبَادُ مُقْتَرِفُونَ فِي لَيْلِهِمْ وَنَهَارِهِمْ، لَطُفَ بِهِ خُبْراً، وَأَحَاطَ بِهِ عِلْماً، أَعْضَاؤُكُمْ شُهُودُهُ، وَجَوَارِحُكُمْ جُنُودُهُ، وَضَمائِرُكُمْ عُيُونُهُ، وَخَلَوَاتُكُمْ عِيَانُهُ.
