4 DoT’s Organ Transplant Functions Provide support for and oversight of the U.S. transplant system to promote evidenced-based organ allocation policies and systems. Increase Organ Donation Grants Contracts Special Projects

5 Two Types of Organ Donors Deceased −Can provide multiple organs  Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines Living −Provide one organ, usually kidney

6 Why Focus on Organ Donation and Transplantation? Organ transplantation saves lives when no other option exists. Just one deceased donor … Can save up to 8 lives (organs) And enhance more than 50 others (eyes and tissues)

7 Good News 1988-2013 564,532 lives were saved by … 263,368 organ donors 2013 alone 28,954 lives were saved by … 14,256 donors
