EUTROPHICATION BSAP ECOLOGICAL OBJECTIVES i.Concentration of nutrients close to natural levels ii.Clear water* iii.Natural level of algal blooms iv.Natural distribution and occurrence of plants and animals v.Natural oxygen levels INDICATORS i.Winter surface concentrations of nutirents ii.Summer Secchi depth* iii.Chlorophyll α concentration iv.Depth range of submerged vegetation v.Area and length of seasonal oxygen depletion * The transparency of seawater integrates many of the conrete effects of eutrophication and has been chosen as the primary ecological objective, other indicators are regarded as supportive indicators

EUTROPHICATION MSFD DESCRIPTOR 5 Human induced eutrophication is minimised, especially adverese effects thereof, such as losses in biodiversity, ecosystem degredation, harmful algal blooms, and oxygen deficiency in bottom waters. 5.1 Nutrient levels 5.2 Direct effects of nutirent enrichment 5.3 Indirect effects of nutrient enrichment Nutrient concentration in the water column (5.1.1) Nutrient ratios (silica, nitrogen and phosphorous), where appropriate (5.1.2) Chlorofphyll concentration in the water column (5.2.1) Water transparaceny related to increase in suspended algea, where relevant (5.2.2) Abundance of opportunistic macroalgea (5.2.3) Sp. Shift in floristic composition casued by human activities (5.2.4) Abundance of pernenial seaweeds and seagrasses adversely impacted by decreas in water transparencey (5.3.1) Dissolved oxygen (5.3.2)

Comparison BSAP and MSFD BSAP ECOLOGICAL OBJECTIVES i.Concentration of nutrients close to natural levels ii.Clear water* iii.Natural level of algal blooms iv.Natural distribution and occurrence of plants and animals v.Natural oxygen levels MSFD DESCRIPTOR 5 5.1 Nutrient levels 5.2 Direct effects of nutirent enrichment 5.3 Indirect effects of nutrient enrichment BSAP has much more recommendations for Eutrophication than compared to the MSFD.

Sweden Good Marine Environment Report part 2: Good Environmental Status (GES) and environmental Standards- have data and information and the next step is the implemnation of monitoring programs – Next step: Define and implement monitoring programs by 2014 – Define action programs (Program of Measures) in 2015 – Programme of measures intiated in 2016 – Achieve GES (first round) by 2020 The MSFD is actually become a Swedish Marine Environmental Regulation (law) Review of the ecological targets for eutrophication of the HELCOM BSAP (HELCOM TARGREV)

How can we use this information in Sweden? Race for the Baltic- Summer Campaign 2013 – Policy Secure environment ministers application of HELCOM BSAP Put pressure to achieve the objectives of sustainable fishing and especially of cod in BSAP and MSFD – Campaign Ensure the political message of the campaign Involve appropriate NGO partners in the region Spreading the message of campaign to policy makers and other contacts in our network Helping to organise strategic events
