UNIT 5 ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM

Electrical charges What is lightning? Lightning is an electrical discharge.

Electrical charges What produces it? It is produced by a strong electric current created between the negative charge at the bottom of a thunder cloud and the positive charge of the Earth’s surface.

Electrical charges Do thunder and lightning occur at the same time? They do occur at the same time. However light travels much faster than sound.

ELECTRICAL CHARGES ¿Do you think all objects have electric charges? POSITIVE CHARGE YES; electric charge is a characteristic of matter NEGATIVE CHARGE Negative charges can move from one place or object to another POSITIVELY CHARGED OBJECTS Have more positive than negative charges NEGATIVELY CHARGED OBJECTS Have more negative than positive charges NEUTRAL OBJECTS Same number of + and - charges

+- ++ - - Objects with opposite charges attract Objects with the same charges repel

Static electricity

YOU KNOW NEGATIVE CHARGES MOVE FROM BODY TO BODY. IF YOU FIRSTLY PASS ALL YOUR NEGATIVE CHARGES ONTO THE BALLOON, NEXT YOUR HAIR IS CHARGED ONLY WITH POSITIVE CHARGES. CONSEQUENTLY THE BALLOON IS NEGATIVELY CHARGED. FINALLY; YOUR HAIR STICKS TO THE BALOON AS YOU KNOW THAT OPOSITES ATTRACT.
