How can war be avoided? Aggressor: In war, there is often a group that is considered the aggressor. However, defining the aggressor is not always clear cut. Why is it hard to identify the catalyst for a specific war? 1933: The first Mickey Mouse watch was sold. Why do you think America has fallen in love with a rodent? Feudalism was a societal structure in which lords had land and could let serfs work on it for payment or they could give it to knights for fighting their battles. What was appealing about this way of life? Freedom (of the press): We love our freedoms. The press feels responsible for keeping the American people informed. In the past month, name one news piece you were glad the press revealed and one you wish wasn’t revealed. 1753: Freedom of the Press is established when John Peter Zenger, publisher of the New York Weekly, wins his case after being sued by the British Royal Governor (William Crosby). What are the blessings and curses with Freedom of the Press? TRIVIA : Why was every telephone in Canada and the United States shut down for one minute in 1922?

Debate: The process of debate has been used to justify and/or clarify opinions on a variety of issues. How does a debate and a discussion differ in meaning? 1787: The first debates began as the Continental Congress convened to develop a key document in U.S. history. What was the document? “I make the most money, I think, in Russia and Paris, for the people of those countries are so willing to be amused, so eager to see something new and out of the ordinary.” In 1926, the famed magician who said this stayed underwater for 91 minutes inside a box with air meant to last 6 minutes. Who was it?

Exploration: Many explorers faced difficult conditions in an effort to explore our world. What do you think was the motivation for exploration if there was so much danger? 1794: The angry farmers of Pennsylvania had become frustrated with taxes on liquor and stills and stage a revolt. This uprising, called the Whiskey Rebellion, forced George Washington to send almost 13,000 troops to protect the tax collectors. Why are taxes levied in the first place if most people do not like them? In 1861, Thaddeus Lowe was first professional airman for the U.S. military by flying reconnaissance. What did he fly? Describe how this style of production works. Who am I? *I am an inventor. *My accomplishment in 1877 was the first phonograph. *Motel 6 must love me because I made it possible to “leave the light on!”

Japanese soldiers stormed the Imperial Palace, attempting to block the agreement. What would have resulted in the continuation of the war? Unconditional: When the Japanese surrendered, it was only accepted if it was unconditional. What does that term mean to the people of Japan? 1898: U.S. forces capture Manila Bay after a three month blockade. A blockade prevents departures or arrivals to the people of Manila. Make a list a 5 inventions that you wish someone would invent right now! 1935: Benny Goodman performs in Los Angeles but the music is broadcast nationwide. This is often cited as the onset of the “Swing Era.” What draws you to a certain style of music? Quote: Nobody roots for Goliath. Wilt Chamberlain was born in 1936. Wilt was one of the first NBA basketball players. What do you think he inferred by this statement?

Revolt: A revolt is a rebellion. Write a rich sentence, using revolt in it, to describe an event you have recently studied in history. Make sure, without being explicit, the reader can infer what revolt means. 1831: Nat Turner leads a slave revolt in Virginia in which 60 whites were killed. Eventually, he was captured and hung. Why do you think the slaves were not victorious? (There were certainly more slaves that white slave owners) 1864: The Swiss humanitarian, Jean Dunant, founded the Red Cross. What does the Red Cross do today?

Use abolition in a sentence but use it to describe the abolishment of something besides slavery. 1852: Uncle Tom’s Cabin is published and immediately became a bestseller.
