Mindsets Carol Dweck

Which of these statements do you agree with? 1.Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can’t change very much. 2.You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how intelligent you are. 3.No matter how much intelligence you have, you can always change it quite a bit. 4.You can always substantially change how intelligent you are.

Which of these statements do you agree with? 1.You are a certain kind of person, and there is not much that can be done to really change that. 2.No matter what kind of person you are, you can always change substantially. 3.You can do things differently, but the important parts of who you are can’t really be changed. 4.You can always change basic things about the kind of person you are.

Fixed and growth mindset Slide 1: 1 & 2 reflect a fixed mindset 3 & 4 reflect a growth mindset Slide 2: 1 & 3 reflect a fixed mindset 2 & 4 reflect a growth mindset

What is a mindset? The human brain is constantly monitoring and interpreting what happens in their lives (running monologue) Fixed mindset eg judging “this means I am a loser ” Fixed mindset eg judging “this means I am a loser ” Growth mindset eg implications for learning and action “how can I improve? ” Growth mindset eg implications for learning and action “how can I improve? ” 4 steps to move from a fixed mindset to growth mindset 4 steps to move from a fixed mindset to growth mindset

4 steps to move from a fixed to a growth mindset Support the coachee to: 1.Learn to hear their fixed mindset “voice” 2. Recognise that they have a choice 3. Encourage them to learn to talk back in a growth mindset voice 4. Take the growth mindset action (commit to the challenge wholeheartedly, learn from setbacks and try again, hear the feedback and act on it)

How and when can “mindsets” be used in coaching Be aware of the mindset of your coachee Use steps 1-4 within your coaching to enable the coachee to self coach (fixed mindsets are more likely to become dependant on their coach) The mindset of the coachee may determine the types of questions that you ask...and the way that you ask them (feedback and challenge p67-72)

How and when can “mindsets” be used in coaching Check the commitment to actions during the coaching session and “check in” in between coaching sessions A useful tool, but probably not to be shared with the coachee (especially if they are a fixed mindset!)
