Natasha and Jessie’s interview with Annie Poledniok

Annie was born in Stratford in 1926 on 16 th April.

Annie’s first personal sporting memory was playing netball at school.

Annie remembers watching the Olympics, using a magic lantern television when she was 10. Her grandson plays football and she used to support Southend United. If she had to choose a favourite sportsperson from now, it would be David Beckham

Annie has some sad memories about the 1953 flood on Canvey…... She can remember a baby in a basket being let go because the parents died by drowning. She came from Lakeside Corner. But the baby has a happy life now, she was adopted by a family called the Fosters and Annie is still friends with her.

This picture of The 1621 Dutch cottage was taken in the 1950’s. The Red Cow Public House, rebuilt, in the distance. The Red Cow was renamed The King Canute after the Floods of 1953 Annie remembers The Red Cow re-named because the flood stopped there, so they named it after the Viking King.
