Steinkjer school

Our presentation 1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition 2 nd grade - Life in the intertidal zone 3 rd grade – Solar energy 4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository 5 th grade – Hydropower 6 th grade – Saving energy 7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition Goals: Make the students aware of the degradation in nature Using different objects to dig down and examine what happens

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition Food leftovers, different types of plastics, glass, metal, milk carton and a wooden stick

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition The students get their own object – tie a thread around it and dig it down in an aquarium

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition Satisfied with their effort. The final touch before putting it away

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition After 3 weeks something happens in the aquarium. What is growing? A carrot or a milk carton?

1st grade - Waste sorting. Projects with decomposition Summary: A lot turned out the way the students had predicted. The most of the food leftovers were gone. Plastic, glass and metal did not change, so it’s not a good idea to throw these objects in nature. The biggest surprise was that the sandwich and the lettuce still were there – but the waxed paper was gone! An interesting and joyful project with curious students.

2 nd grade - Life in the intertidal zone Goals: Recognize insects and seaweed species with species map Gain an understanding of how energy use affects life in the intertidal zone Be able to describe the food chains Look at some species which are dying out, and find reasons for this

2 nd grade - Life in the intertidal zone We use the tide areas near to the school The children are looking for seaweed and small animals

2 nd grade - Life in the intertidal zone They make many exiting discoveries, and the show eagerly what they have found This is not supposed to be here…

2 nd grade - Life in the intertidal zone Findings are put on a species map to see which species they have found

3 rd grade – Solar energy Goals: Learn about global warming Learn how the sun affects us, and how space is constructed Learn how renewable solar energy can be transformed into other forms of energy

3 rd grade – Solar energy Theory in the classroom, to learn about how the sun affects us.

3 rd grade – Solar energy At the science center, they learn how solar energy can be converted, and how a solar panel is constructed.

3 rd grade – Solar energy Finally the cars are tested, to see if they can move with “solar energy”.

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository Goals: Get an understanding of the importance of sorting waste Understand that everything can be recycled, making us use less energy Learn how the decomposition of waste can provide energy to our local communities

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository To be environmentally conscious, of course, we rode bikes to the repository, instead of taking the bus..

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository A well-organized and orderly junkyard No birds, and no bad smell

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository Here we are in the paper hall The kids are sent into the paper pile to find milk cartons with name and phonenumbers written on them

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository Every month winners will be drawn. It's smart to be environmentally responsible..

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository Disposal of waste can create greenhouse gases, including methane At Tranamarka the gas is collected in a tube, and burned of This reduces release of greenhouse gases with 80 percent

4 th grade - Visit to the garbage repository The gas is used for heating the sports halls and artificial grass pitches in Steinkjer

5 th grade – Hydropower Goals: Learn how direct water power was used to cut timber, make flour and produce woolen cloths. Learn how the water later became used to produce electricity through turbines 99 percent of Norway's electricity consumption comes from hydropower

5 th grade – Hydropower Østby waterfall is a half hour bike ride from school It is part of a museum, where it has rebuilt a saw, a mill and wool factory.

5 th grade – Hydropower This is how we made flour before we started to use hydropower.. and after we started to use hydropower. The children got to try

5 th grade – Hydropower Cutting of timber for building materials became much easier when the water power took over Watch your fingers children..

5 th grade – Hydropower This is how wool clothes were made without water power.. and with water power. Men took over women's work when the production became mechanical…

5 th grade – Hydropower At the science center the students learn how water are used to produce electricity through turbines The principle is the same as the direct water power at the museum, but now the water source can be far away from the factory.

6 th grade – Saving energy (demo Steinkjer) Goals: Create interest in and knowledge about energy, energy consumption and energy savings

6 th grade – Saving energy (demo Steinkjer) Cooperation with NTE, where the students will get new electricity meters installed at home Those are smart electricity meters, which will make it easier and more fun to control power consumption

6 th grade – Saving energy (demo Steinkjer) The students have until now been working on different tasks: 1. Measuring power consumption at home, during a week 2. Comparing the consumption of one week in January, March and May

6 th grade – Saving energy (demo Steinkjer) 3. Making hypotheses about how they can affect power consumption, and test them out later on.

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power Goal: Learn about the possibilities with wind energy

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power We were visited by one of NTE's engineers within the wind power

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power She learned the students about: 1. The possibilities with wind power in Norway.

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power 2. How a windmill works.

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power 3. The dimensions of the new windmills Statue of Liberty gets small…

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power 4. Impact on wildlife in the area around the windmills Moose and deer returns after the construction period Small collision hazard for eagle, but the construction work disturb nesting

7 th grade - Cooperation with the NTE on wind power Practical experiments to determine how the windmill must be placed to give as good effect as possible More practical work will be done at the science center later on

Thank you!
