Skaggs bought first Skaggs sore from his father in American Falls, Idaho in 1915. By 1926, M.B merged 428 Skaggs store with 322 Safeway (formerly Selig) stores to become Safeway, Inc. Safeway is listed on the NYSE by 1928. Safeway Expands There are now over 1,300 Safeway stores across the US. These include 266 Safeway stores in Northern California and Hawaii, 273 Vons stores in Southern California and Nevada, 107 Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas, as well as 28 Carrs stores in Alaska. In 2014, Safeway is merging with Cerberus’s Albertsons to create an estimate of 2,400 stores with 250,000 employees.
