1. Let go of everything you know about God…. We’re going to hear a story told by Jesus about the nature and character of God.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the market-place doing nothing. 4 He told them, “You also go and work in

3. my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” 5 So they went. He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, “Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?”

4. 7 “Because no one has hired us,” they answered. He said to them, “You also go and work in my vineyard.” 8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.”

5. 9 ‘The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 “These who were hired last worked only one

6. hour,” they said, “and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.” 13 ‘But he answered one of them, “I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.

7. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?”

8. This is shocking and stunningly unfair… But if this were all we knew about God what would we conclude? He operates very differently from the world around him. Outrageous, unearned, generosity.

10. Infectious..? Definitely the craze of the moment!

11. People can’t fail to be affected by generosity. It’s a spiritual force that operates at a spiritual level. And we never forget outrageous generosity.

12. Generosity allows us to look into the heart of God. The later workers don’t deserve their pay. It’s entirely due to the goodness of their employer. In this detail lies the heart of the gospel; not the world of merit but the world of grace.

13. Generosity allows us to look into the heart of God. It’s the difference between religion and relationship. Religion: we make it fair. Relationship: we understand grace. Everything we have comes from God. We give back what he has already given to us.

14. Generosity grows out of our devotional life. A man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?’ Luke 19:16 Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’

15. What God is after is relationship with us. This challenges those things that have the deepest hold on our hearts. Where are we stingy? As we spend time with Jesus we become like him… perfect!

16. How do we allow God to melt our heart over generosity?

17. This parable makes us feel uncomfortable. The power of money – and the idea of getting what we deserve – runs very deep. Spontaneous generosity melts our heart.

18. Generosity reveals our deepest fears: scarcity and security. We live in a time and culture of austerity. We are programmed to live from a position of scarcity.

19. But God is constantly generous. When we are generous we please God. Give, and it will be given to you. Luke 6:38 And we release more generosity. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’

21. There is power in generosity, a power to love above the scratching and clawing of the world. Generosity is the ultimate evidence of a person who is really free. It’s the fruit of a free person and the pathway to freedom itself. Dave Workman
