Urban Introduction Higher Urban As Glasgow grew rapidly into the main commercial and industrial centre of Scotland, and as car ownership and use of lorries for transporting goods increased dramatically from about the 1950s onwards, the city began to suffer more and more from the build up of traffic. Congestion, noise, air pollution, increased travel time and cost to business became major problems. The city, like most others, was in danger of grinding to a halt.
