2 By the end of this lesson you should be able to:  identify office designs  discuss advantages and disadvantages of office designs to employer and employee  apply your knowledge to exam questions.

3 Affected by:  technology  new working practices  new types of jobs.

4 Design affects work output.  Good design can lead to increased productivity.  Motivation improved by pleasant surroundings.

5 Ergonomics  Aesthetics –colour, decor, fabrics and surfaces.  Acoustic screens and barriers (noise minimisation).  Lighting and heating.  Layout.

6 Sick building syndrome  Term given to office buildings where staff generally complain of feeling unwell. Causes – drafts, leaks, poor ergonomics Results – staff absence, stress, poor productivity

7 Cellular layout One or two people work in a room. Hierarchical – easy to see who is most important. Open plan All levels of employee work in the same office. Hierarchy not obvious – one for all and all for one.
