S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 3 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel Introduction S-DMB is based on 3GPP UTRA FDD W-CDMA re-use of chipset and radio protocol technology re-use of network infrastructure equipment re-use of 3GPP handsets with minor adaptation Mass marketed communication medium where terrestrial coverage not deployed for business attractiveness reasons terrestrial system suffered environmental damages terrestrial network requires complementary coverage Low to high data rate broadcast, point to point, location services IMT-2000 Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) frequency band Based on a dedicated high power geo-stationary satellite
4
S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 4 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB System concept - Radio Access Architecture S-DMB is operable on its own Frequency bands Full reuse of 3GPP UTRA FDD W-CDMA waveform all the cells use the same frequency spectrum (full frequency reuse) no frequency planning requirement
5
S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 5 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB System concept - Radio Access Architecture : "On its own configuration" Network infrastructure with fully standardized 3GPP equipment: Node B, RNC, OMC Suitable for rural, suburban and urban when the handset is visible from the satellite
6
S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 6 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB System concept - Radio Access Architecture Full coverage with Gap Fillers Situations where the handset is not visible from the satellite (blockage by buildings, indoor penetration, etc.) network of Gap Fillers : signal repetition within a terrestrial coverage
7
S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 7 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB System concept - Radio Access Architecture Gap Fillers Gap Fillers : Repetition and transparent amplification in the MSS band Synchronous transmission of the same content over the same code at the same frequency UE Rake receiver combination of the terrestrial and satellite signals 1 carrier reused in all the spots no terrestrial frequency planning requirement fast deployment low power/low cost 3GPP equipment may be co-located with 3GPP terrestrial Node Bs

S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 11 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB User Equipment S-DMB basic handset = 3G class 3 handset (250 mW) with adaptation for frequency agility to MSS Possibility to transmission power and antenna gain boosting
12
S-DMB : a new tool for Public Protection Disaster Recovery p 12 All rights reserved © 2002, Alcatel S-DMB data rates Forward link : low data rate (~1.5 kbps) to high data rate (384 kbps) Return link : due to transmit poser limitations, depending on S-DMB User Equipment configuration S-DMB User Equipment location in the satellite spot (i.e. elevation) in any case, minimal low data rate service (Short Message Service) (assumption : 30° average UE elevation, 10 dB link margin)
