3 2 The IDEA Partnership extends appreciation to the  Community of Practice on Transition for their foundational collaborative work -and- acknowledges the contributions of cross-stakeholders from 15 states, representing  Teachers  General Education Administrators  Special Education Administrators  Secondary Transition Coordinators  Higher Education, and  Technical Assistance Providers in the creation of this presentation.

9 Tie to Assessment 2 assessment consortiums have formed; both are focused on assessing students during the year, not solely at the end of the year Clearer standards will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple ways Alternate Assessments (1%) to be aligned to Common Core Standards Common Assessment to be in place by 2014-2015 8

10 Impact on Transition Needs Transition defined: (20 U.S.C. § 1401 sec. 602 [34]) A coordinated set of activities for a child with a disability Designed to facilitate the child's movement from school to post-school activities Based on the individual child’s needs, taking into account the child’s strengths, preferences, and interests Common core state standards will drive instruction within a framework of skills and expectations for inclusive participation, with a focus on college and career-readiness 9
