Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Building relationships and working together can be of the upmost importance for faculty and Chief Student Services Officers. There are often overlapping areas of interests and concerns between Academic Senates and Student Services, particularly in light of the new Student Success Task Force's recommendations and the recent passage of SB 1456, the Student Success Act of 2012. This breakout will discuss the value and importance of such alliances and practices to develop and sustain these relationships. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Session of Dialog What are the key issues that you need to work on together this year and next? Are there issues in front of you right now that require student services and instructional faculty working together on? What are the mechanisms you use to work together effectively? What strategies have you used that have been successful? What have you tried that didn’t work? How have you sustained ongoing relationships? How do you deal with points of disagreement? Questions / Scenarios to facilitate dialog… Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: How can instruction and student services work together more closely regarding enrollment management and the scheduling of classes, to make sure that the courses students need to complete basic skills, sequences, certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements are scheduled appropriately (including optimum times and day)? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Scenario: The current composition of the college Curriculum Committee does not include a counselor. The CSSO upon the request of the Director of Counseling has asked the Academic Senate president to update the Curriculum Committee composition to include a counselor as a voting member. The Academic Senate president has informed the CSSO that the Curriculum Committee is made up of representative from instructional areas of the college and therefore adding a counselor as a voting member would not be appropriate. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: One of the SSTF recommendations being looked at by the CCCCO is the Scorecard. What role will faulty have locally with the Scorecard so that it provides helpful information to the college? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Scenario: Because of the difficulty of finding faculty, given their teaching schedules, to serve on Student grievance panels, the CSSO is proposing a change to Board Policy that would NOT require faculty to serve on these panels. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: For many colleges, the Articulation Officer is housed in Student Services. How can the Academic Senate and the student services office work together in seeing that department chairs are willing to work with the Articulation Officer and to take articulation for transfer as a serious part of the work of the college? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Scenario: The director of Student Life and Leadership has worked with the students to updated a Board policy about Speech: Time, Place, and Manner which offers guidelines on how the district coordinates with organizations and individuals who wish to visit the college for the purposes of sharing information with, primarily, the students. The Academic Senate president has asked that this policy come to the Academic Senate Council for feedback and approval. The director of Student Life and Leadership has informed the Academic Senate president that this is not something which affects the faculty and would be happy to send it to the senate as an information item only. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: How can student services and instructional faculty work together to notify and help students who are in danger of loosing their BOG fee waiver because of academic standards? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Scenario: Given the recent change in Chancellor’s Office guidelines, the CSSO has directed the director of Admissions & Records to immediately change the drop without a W date to the 1 st week of the term. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: Should decisions about how to implement the Student Success Task Force recommendations be the sole responsibility of the Academic Senate? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Scenario: The CSSO has decided to implement a new conference shared learning form that all staff in student services, including faculty, are required to complete after attending a conference in order to be reimbursed for professional development expenses. Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012

Working Together – CSSOs and Faculty Question: What’s the right balance between instruction and student services in working with students on probation and dismissal? Fall ASCCC Plenary 2012
