Preaching Through The Hymn Book “Give Me The Bible” (# 500)

The Bible has a “glad message” (gospel) It cheers wanderers who are alone, tossed about by tempestuous winds We can wander off into sin Lk 15:4 Heb 2:1 We can be blown about by error Eph 4:14 Give me the Bible, star of gladness gleaming, To cheer the wand’rer lone and temptest-tossed; No storm can hide that radiance peaceful beaming, since Jesus came to seek and save the lost. VERSE 1

No sin is too black, too “stormy” that the Bible cannot cut through to shed light Its message of peace calms the storm Rom 5:1 Eph 2:14-18 Its Author tries to “seek & save” Lk 19:10 Give me the Bible, star of gladness gleaming, To cheer the wand’rer lone and temptest-tossed; No storm can hide that radiance peaceful beaming, since Jesus came to seek and save the lost. VERSE 1

If we think about our sin, our hearts should be broken, grieved Rom 6:16-21 Mt 5:4 We should be afraid of what we’ve done to God, our relationship with Him Give me the Bible when my heart is broken, When sin and grief have filled my soul with fear; Give me the precious words by Jesus spoken, Hold up faith’s lamp to show my Savior near. VERSE 2

Only the “precious words of Jesus” will be able to calm such fears Yes, we abandoned Him Eph 2:13 Isa 59:1-2 Yet, “faith’s lamp” shows Him nearby, ready to receive us Rom 10:8 Give me the Bible when my heart is broken, When sin and grief have filled my soul with fear; Give me the precious words by Jesus spoken, Hold up faith’s lamp to show my Savior near. VERSE 2

Only the Bible will correctly show us the “dangers” of our present realm Our perspective is skewed Isa 5:20-21 We do not heed others’ failures Jer 3:6-11 Give me the Bible, all my steps enlighten, Teach me the dangers of this realm below; That lamp of safety o’er the gloom shall brighten, That light alone the path of peace can show. VERSE 3

May our attitude be, “Teach me these dangers” Titus 2:11-12 Only the Bible will accurately show the right path Jn 6:68 Rom 3:4 There is only one path to take Jer 6:16 Give me the Bible, all my steps enlighten, Teach me the dangers of this realm below; That lamp of safety o’er the gloom shall brighten, That light alone the path of peace can show. VERSE 3

Only the Bible sheds light on immortality It needs to be shed “by the open grave” Death = a serious reality to consider Eccl 7:2 Life is brief Jas 4:14 Immortality awaits all mankind Jn 5:28-29 Give me the Bible, lamp of life immortal, Hold up that splendor by the open grave; Show me the light from heaven’s shining portal, Show me the glory gilding Jordan’s wave. VERSE 4

Only the Bible can show heaven’s shining “portal” (imposing entrance) Only the Bible can show the glory that “gilds” (brightens, illuminates) Jordan Death is not the end (cp. to Humanism) Give me the Bible, lamp of life immortal, Hold up that splendor by the open grave; Show me the light from heaven’s shining portal, Show me the glory gilding Jordan’s wave. VERSE 4

Death is something we all face Heb 9:27 It is not to be feared…unless you are outside of Christ Heb 2:14-15 It is a step on “road back to God” Phil 1:20-21 Give me the Bible, lamp of life immortal, Hold up that splendor by the open grave; Show me the light from heaven’s shining portal, Show me the glory gilding Jordan’s wave. VERSE 4

Only this “shining message” guides in the narrow way Mt 7:13-14 Psa 119:105 Only God is wise enough to combine seemingly contradictory concepts Give me the Bible, Holy message shining; Thy light shall guide me in the narrow way; Precept and promise, law and love combining, Till night shall vanish in eternal day. CHORUS Precept & promise…law & love

Only the Bible can cause the “night” to vanish into “eternal day” 2 Pet 1:19 Give me the Bible, Holy message shining; Thy light shall guide me in the narrow way; Precept and promise, law and love combining, Till night shall vanish in eternal day. CHORUS

Conclusion The theme of this hymn = “light” There does not exist a more enlightening message than the Bible Jn 1:1-9 12:46 The only way out of the darkness is for one to open his eyes Acts 26:18 Let us therefore “come to the light” Rom 13:12
