BODY PARAGRAPHS SUPPORT: FROM BARE TO ELABORATED

THE BODY OF AN ESSAY Paragraphs #2, #3, and #4 of a five- paragraph essay make up the body of the essay. In each body paragraph, you develop one of your arguments, points, focal points of description, or explanations as fully as you can, restating the argument (persuasive) or explanation (expository) and then expanding on it with examples and evidence that support it.

BODY CONT’D These are the most important paragraphs in the grading of the Florida Writes Test. The judges are looking at how you support the broad statements you make. Use nitty-gritty detail !

BODY CONT’D Each of these paragraphs needs a topic sentence and a concluding sentence. Use a transition at the beginning of each paragraph. Try to be different. Use spectacular vocabulary to show a good knowledge of words. A little well-placed humor and creativity definitely add to the quality of the paper.

SUPPORT: FROM BARE TO ELABORATED PROMPT: Teen Freedom – should it be expanded or limited? THESIS STATEMENT: Teen freedom at Galaxy Middle School needs to be expanded. We should have more freedom at lunch, in the routes we choose to get to class, and in regards to bathroom usage.

“Bare” or “Snack” : Little or no supporting details I don’t think we should ask to use the restroom! Some teachers say “no,” and some kids might pee in their pants. My first period teacher gives us four tickets to use the restroom. I think that is so stupid.

“EXTENDED” OR “MEAL”: Moderate amount of support Lastly, I don’t think we should ask to go to the restroom! Some teachers say “no,” and some kids might pee in their pants! My first period teacher gives us four tickets to use the restroom. I think that is so stupid because the teacher can’t really know if the student needs to go or not. A student shouldn’t have to do the “pee-pee dance” to be allowed to go to the bathroom! It’s humiliating to act like we’re two years-old in front of our peers just to ensure our teacher will say “yes” to our simple request to meet a normal bodily function!

“ELABORATED” OR “FEAST”: A large amount of supporting details. Subject comes alive for the reader!

Finally, and most importantly, teenagers at Galaxy need more freedom when it comes to our use of the bathrooms. Would you like to ask someone’s permission every time you wanted to use the restroom? Well, I don’t think we should ask to go to the restroom! Cont’d ->

Besides, there are times a person doesn’t want to call attention to themselves to get permission. We just want to excuse ourselves and get right back. If we had this freedom to go when we wanted, at first some kids might abuse it, but the excitement would die down, and then it wouldn’t be a big deal. Teachers wouldn’t have to stop teaching to write out a pass, and students wouldn’t feel like little kids in front of their classmates.

LET’S PRACTICE! Directions: Select the letter that best identifies the amount of support within each example.. A.Bare (snack) B.Extended (meal) C.Elaborated (feast)

When the track team isn’t using the track, we can use it until it starts getting too dark to run. I am using my older brother’s weights to try to build up my leg muscles. I’m planning to buy more weights soon.

PRACTICE CONT’D 4. ___I like the holidays because we have time off of school. This means my parents let me stay up later at night and I can sleep in as late as I want! I also get to spend time with my family and even out-of town relatives pay us visits. Every year my family practices certain traditions that are so much fun like making snowflakes for our windows, baking cookies and decorating them together while playing festive holiday music, and going Christmas caroling! Holidays are so fun! 5. ___I like the holidays. 6. ___I like the holidays because we have time off of school. I get to spend time with my family, and we have many fun family traditions.
