2 What do you understand/know about the SST process?

3 SST is… A process in which a teacher is assisted in determining ways in which a learner can be supported for academic success.

4 SST is not… A meeting for an Individual Education Plan (IEP); A gateway to Special Education; An opportunity for a parent conference.

5 SST Documents Referral Form Accommodation Plan Kindergarten Referral Form Denial Letter

6 What are Accommodations? What the teacher has done prior to completing forms for SST meeting to support the needs of the learner within the classroom; An opportunity for the student to have a different experience for educational success within his/her classroom setting.

7 What qualifies a student for SST? Evidence of academic performance SIGNIFICANTLY below grade level. A student that does not fit in with peers behaviorally or academically.

8 What disqualifies a student for SST? A learner who is at grade level in one curricular area, yet is somewhat struggling in another curricular area. A student who is working at the same level as his/her peers.

9 Teacher responsibilities for SST meeting. Student work samples; –Reading –Writing (any curricular area) –Mathematics –Language Arts / Mathematics Assessments and data Attendance record; Evidence of behavioral issues.

10 Teacher talking points for SST: Reason for referral and specific statement of concern(s); Areas of student’s strengths and weaknesses; Expectations of this meeting. Remember, the referring teacher is making the case for the support this learner needs.

11 Can’t you just put ….. in Special Ed? ….. is nice. ….. seems to come from a nice family. Can’t ….. just go to resource? Can ……. be moved to a lower grade? ….. is slow. …can’t think right. I don’t want ….. in my room. ….. is not taking the medication.

12 How would you feel if someone said this about you or your child? How do those phrases support the academic success of the learner?

13 Teacher talking points for SST (academic) Areas of strength Examples: Excels in math; Loves to do handwriting; Enjoys art; Good in sports; Work well with math tools; Visual leaner. Areas of weakness Examples: Difficulty reading textbooks; Unable to phonetically sound out words; Disorganized; Poor handwriting.

14 Teacher talking points for SST (social/emotional) Areas of strength Examples: Very cooperative; Willing to please; Recognized leader; Tries hard; Helpful. Areas of weakness Examples: Does not complete work in class; Does not turn in work/homework; Poor study skills; Easily distracted.

15 Who does the Student Success Team Consist of? Coordinator Counselor Psychologist Nurse Healthy Start Coordinator Instructional Coach(es) Mental Health/Social Liasons (Maybe all or some of the above) Of course, parent and referring teacher attend meeting.

16 Decisions of SST Decisions of team can range from mild intervention to aggressive, including: –Changes within classroom; –Change to another classroom; (receiving teacher needs to be supportive and accommodating) –Special Education Assessment.
