3 SOME HELPFUL DEFINITIONS What is Rehabilitation? Rehabilitation involves: Restoring a person to good health or a useful life through support, therapy and education. Rehabilitation allows the substance user to ultimately learn how to remain abstinent

4 What is Drug Rehabilitation? Rehabilitation from drug abuse requires the individual to become involved in detoxification or withdrawal from the drugs as the initial step in the recovery process. It seeks to help an individual to explore available options, make better choices and to reclaim him/herself from drugs via rehabilitation in an in-patient or out-patient programme.

7 PHILOSOPHICAL BASE The clinical approaches and resources utilized in the delivery of education and treatment are drawn from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health programmes, (Formerly the Addiction Research Foundation) located in Ontario, Canada, The Centre for Substance Abuse Treatment (US Department of Health and Human Services),

8 OUR MANDATE The Inmate Drug Rehabilitation Counselling Programme, situated at Her Majesty’s Glendairy Prison, Barbados, is responsible for developing and implementing drug treatment and rehabilitation programmes for inmates at Glendairy Prison in particular, and for juveniles within the Government Industrial Schools in general.

9 Rationale To address the needs of inmates with drug abuse and other related problems and pressures in their lives which resulted in their making poor choices. To exposed inmates to concepts in addiction, self-assessment, relapse prevention issues, bio-psycho-social insights, spirituality and 12-step programmes to help them achieve their desired goals and gain insight into their social environment.

10 Our Goal To create opportunities for inmates to reclaim their lives from drug use/criminal behaviour, utilizing the group process.

11 Services Provided Individual Counselling Pre-release programming Education and Treatment Modules Referrals to community inpatient and community outpatient programmes Tracking of individuals released to the community

12 We offer the following Groups Psycho Education Treatment (Behavioral Modification, Reality Therapy Men Specific Women Specific and After-Care Men’s/Women’s Pre-release groups

13 The Treatment Modules Consist of intrusive interventions with a focus on: (a) Cognitive development, (b) The evolution of inmate’s criminal thinking (c) Coping Skills, (d) Managing Stress (e) Managing Anger (f) Accountability for one’s behaviour (g) Affirmation of inmates’ strengths versus weaknesses.

14 Women specific groups Focus is on: Psycho-education and treatment Strengthening identities, Breaking the abuse cycle Parenting Understanding the complexities of men who batter Personal exploitation Self-esteem Victimization

15 Individual Counselling These sessions are driven by the particular inmate’s cognitive development, utilizing approaches geared to help reinforce and boost his/her self-esteem, self-awareness, choices and responsibilities.

16 PROGRAMME EVALUATION Inmates are randomly asked to evaluate the programme. The process also involves completion of questionnaires for collecting self-reporting data. Evaluations are open to professional review.
