3 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 3 Program Requirements for Document Translation Title I and Title III –Academic and language assessments, teacher qualifications, school plans, parental involvement policies, school improvement, English Learners. –Williams Case Settlement, Uniform Complaint Procedures.

4 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 4 What is the CMD A Web-based clearinghouse that stores (1) information about translated documents and (2) links, when available. LEAs and the CDE contribute and maintain data about their translated documents. Searchable by language, program, topic, or key words. A simple-to-use, free service for LEAs.

Supports school administrators in their work with English Learner families Increases access to information about translated documents and translation resources, including links to actual translations Creates a community of translators and translation providers.

6 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 6 The CMD is not... A database that stores the actual translated documents A mandate A total solution A place for LEAs to send documents to be translated

7 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 7 Status of the CMD Currently, 500 translations are available through the CMD database. More than 600 registered users, representing 406 agencies in 52 counties. Documents have been accessed nearly 3,000 times.

8 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 8 Why It Works The CMD brings together potential users and potential providers (a little like e-Bay). It provides information about each translation that help users in making decisions. The CMD helps to build local capacity by providing a resource among translations and technology staff, EL directors, and others.

9 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 9 Success Factors: Who Makes the CMD Work LEAs, through contributions to the CMD and by accessing documents The CDE, through translation and posting of parental notification templates. The Legislature, through authorization and funding support Advocates, through guidance, feedback, and political influence

10 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 10 The CDE’s Translation Effort Templates of parental notifications are being made available in as many as 18 or more languages. Qualified translators Second and third level reviews This is a project in progress. (More information to follow regarding possible end date).

12 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 12 Free of charge to LEAs Find out if your district or COE has requested access codes for the CMD; see the third link at: www.cde.ca/gov.ls/pf/cm Request district/COE access codes by e-mailing cmd@cde.ca.gov. Does your district have good translations it’s willing to share? Consider the advantage of translation consortia.
